Get off my lawn!
|
That was weird and scary
I pulled my 911 out of my garage to go for a drive long enough to get the oil up to 190 or so so I could check the oil level. It is 78 degrees and clear blue skies here today.
Anyway, I realized I left my sunglasses in my El Camino, so I turn off the 911, and went to get my sunglasses. Less than 30 seconds time, and guy stops in a new Toyota pickup and approaches me. He says he want to buy my car. I gave him my standard reply, it is not for sale for any reasonable price. He asked what the price is and I said 50 grand. He replied how about 30 cash. I said I want to sell it almost as much as I want a Mohawk haircut and facial tattoos. 50 grand is the price. He is going to call his brother in California and see what he says. I told him you can buy nice 911s for a lot less from other people. Mine is not for sale. It is a 1985 911 Carrera with nice paint, and clean looking. I bought it in 1995, and love it. 50K may be low, I should have said 60K. It is locked, and in the garage, and it is disabled right now. The DME relay is in my safe, as are the spare keys. We will be sure to use the alarm if we leave the house at all.

I hate when people intrude like that. I just tell them my car isn't for sale at any price. The people where I live keep an eye out for each other, have guns, and alarms (at least lots of them), and some have dogs and don't like people driving up to their houses. If I see somebody seemingly following me for too long, I stop to see what's going on. I also have a driveway alarm, game cam, and a motion sensor in the back that sets of a horn sound anybody that sets it off can hear.

Happened almost everytime I left my 72T at the shop for the past 3 years... I must say things have calmed down lately (also I have not been at the shop). The market is no longer juicy for speculators.

This guy did not know much about 911s. He was mostly clueless about air cooled 911s.

Happens to me about twice a month, particularly this time of year. Once I noticed a guy in a pickup staying with me for three exits on the highway. He got off at my exit and followed me to a hardware store. At first, that was a little unsettling, but since I'm no longer the attractive young thing I once was, it was pretty obvious why he was tailing me! ;-)
The guys that confront me are always very pleasant and complimentary. They ask about the car and ask how much I'd want to sell. My deflection is honest and easy -- "It was my dad's car and someday I'll give it to my daughter." No one's ever pushed further after that, except to say, "are you sure!" "Yup!" |

I think a lot of people were trying to take advantage of the fact that the market skyrocketed and many long term owners had not been paying attention
I’d think that event happened long ago enough that the car hounds would be giving up hope of finding some unknowing owner by now

I get frequent questions about whether my car is for sale. It doesn’t bother me—I just say no.
Interesting idea removing the DME relay. |

62K is what Hagerty says for 85 Carrera in excellent condition, 79.3 for concourse. Yep, bump up your price if you want to keep it.
40K is only good condition.

I watched one of those shows, I don't know which one.....
Two guys lookin like harley greasers wearing bandanas and sunglasses and generally looking like $hit followed this 67 Shelby GT500 for like . . 5 miles. Took turns through neighborhoods and through town, etc. Really obvious and annoying and sketchy. If I were the owner I'd exit my vehicle pretty pissed off, but I imagine in this particular situation the cameras diffuse the confusion when they finally catch up with the owner. Still a BS move.

I’ve had the same thing happen with my daughters ‘92 5.0 Mustang.
Of course I didn’t say 50 grand but I gave him a number to GTFO. |

Some folk just don't get the message - one repeat offender had to be threatened with being held at gunpoint for the cops to come collect if she came by again... this was on her 4th visit in 6 months. I don't mind folks asking - I do mind folks who don't take "not for sale" as an answer and accept it. |

Happens to me from time to time, usually like this when I'm out in the driveway:
Cuppla guys I've never seen before drive up in a nondescript appliance. Wanna sell your Porch? No. Wanna sell your Toyota? No. Cuppla guys drive off in a nondescript appliance. I figure it's a way to launder cash.

Happens to me all of the time Mostly Gypsy flippers that will take some pictures and try to sell it without ever actually taking ownership. They tell you let me make some calls. They are calling potential buyers to see if they can sell it.

All the more reason to tell them you’d be willing to sell for big, big money. $30k, $50k...that’s chicken feed.

I've thought about registering my face as a trademark.
That way if stores (such as 7-11 or Target) keep using facial recognition on everyone who walk in their stores to sell me advertisements, they first have to pay me modelling royalties in the millions. Maybe this would work with cars as well...? Some scammer taking pics and trying to sell your car online might not be bothered by the police, but you could still sue them privately, even without a known 3rd party victim. |

I have thought for a while that Paul might be right. Once things acquire great value, people start to like them for different reasons than the enthusiasts.
