Another down day, though not like yesterday.

Seems to be the same every quarter. Musk promises big things from Tesla and lots of profit, they miss, he tweets "just wait until next quarter"...rinse and repeat.

The consistent thing about that Tesla / SpaceX / Hyperloop guy is that he is focused on being a Techno-provocateur.

That's it.

Being a business man is not his schtick.

I don't know how this is not obvious to everyone. But there he is with billions invested.... selling mature production product at a loss.

Well, that, and all of Musk's businesses are in the primary business of accepting government subsidies. Selling an actual product is secondary to that.

Musk is a mix of PT Barnum and Charles Ponzi. He's a great promoter but works with bogus info and projections. Like Ponzi, when he runs out of money he goes for a new source (via so new data or product that never quite seems to happen). Talented? Yes. Honest? No way Jose.

They need to update the Model S and possibly X if they want to increase their margins. Sales of those cars have fallen 20% since last year. We leased a Model S a bit more than two years ago, and if they don't update it by the time our lease is up, we will grudgingly look elsewhere. Problem is that no one else seems to offer autopilot and a great large screen dash like Tesla does. Performance is great too.

I have never leased a car before, but this thread, and comments about their viability were one of the primary reasons we didn't buy, the other was the pace of technology. We didn't want to be left with an orphan car if Tesla went under.

good point - maybe he had a subconscious reason for choosing the name besides the overt one

Well, the MSM is finally starting to catch on to what some of us noticed 10 years ago.

https://www.vanityfair.com/news/2019/08/how-elon-musk-gambled-tesla-to-save-solarcity

Quote:
“It’s the clown,” the person at the other end informed him.

Scott, unfazed, figured that Musk must have gotten his number from the company. For the next 20 minutes, he recalls, he and his former employer had a civil conversation. “When are you going to fix your company?” Scott asked.

Musk was pleasant but offered no specifics about the Buffalo plant. Scott continued to ask frank questions. “You took $750 million from New York,” he told Musk, referring to the taxpayer money that the state handed Tesla as part of its Buffalo Billion program to revitalize upstate New York. “You gave us hope that you were going to do something.”

Musk’s responses left Scott unimpressed. “Musk is a nice guy when you talk to him,” he says. “But I think he’s full of ****. He’ll tell you whatever you want to hear.”

speaking of beat-downs...

besides the Taycan ripping away at Tesla's high-end, Chevy just upped the range on the Bolt to 250+ so that means there is not a lot of low end potential for Tesla

OTOH, he did just get BMW's big cheese fired for sinking 3 series sales in competition with the Tesla 3

So is Tesla going out of business or what? Serious question, I don’t follow their stock because I don’t have any.

They are still selling like hot cakes in my part of town but then, it’s Tinseltown. So not the best barometer of the country as a whole. There was a brand new P100d and a Model X in front of coffee shop this morning, both with temp tags.

“Tesla” the brand name and cars will never “go out of business,” i.e., disappear like Tucker or DeLorean.

The brand name, infrastructure and intellectual property is too valuable.

I think there is a very good chance shareholders will get wiped out at some point, though, and there will be a reorganized “Newco” Tesla company, with new ownership.
