has an ATM machine ever given you the wrong amount of $$?
not a big deal if you get a $20 out of the thing.
but the bigger piles? $300. i hate when there is a big line behind me and i just want to take a few seconds to count it out..not sure what i would even do if it was wrong. got me thinking. i dont remember ever being shortchanged or overpaid. you?

Nope, never.
My favorite story of ATMs was from the 1980s and they were fairly new. My bank always printed out the account balance on the receipt. Mine was always pitiful low back then so I just shredded it and went on about my business. One day there was someone else's receipt in the tray. I looked out of curiosity and the balance was like $32,000 and that was how much I paid for my house I was paying a 20 year mortgage on (12.5% bargain rate). I carefully folded that receipt in half and put it in my wallet. That was the era long before cell phones. I finally used that receipt to write my phone number on to give to some chick I met at a bar. I never told her it was not my account! ![]()

Yep, I kept it.
A long time ago in England three hundred pounds. I have no idea who it was meant for. The ATM was making noises and I waited maybe 3 or 4 minutes for it to come up with the insert your card screen, then it started feeding out notes. I grabbed them and left and counted them when I got on the train. These days I'd take them back to the bank the next day. |

Just once.
I was in college and it was a Saturday afternoon and I was taking the last $40 out of my account for gas and groceries. My car was below E and I literally had nothing more than flour and sugar to eat. The ATM got jammed. Didn't get a single penny. Lady behind me got her money just fine. Contacted the bank the following Monday morning. Took them another day for them to reconcile the ATM and my account. That was the longest 3 day weekend of my life. I've since always kept an emergency fund of at least $10 in my car. |

And for the record, I've never had one make a mistake. And I've used them ever since when, in the college student center, BofA was offering nice free Frisbee's if you signed up for a VersaTeller Card! Heck yeah!

I had one spew $3000-4000 out at me 10-15 years ago. The ATM was outside at my bank. I walked in with an armload of $20s and said 'I think this is yours'.

Way back in the early ATM days, a few withdrawals never made it to my bank statement....

Once. Someone loaded twenties in the wrong bin and everybody got a payday. The bank figured it out and everybody got a haircut.

Not an ATM, but an arcade machine was paying out 5 quarters for a dollar. As an enterprising 12YO kid, I changed all my singles, took the quarters to the bank and got more singles.......
Also used a pay phone (remember them?) once than was spitting out extra change. I suspect modern ATMs record enough data to back out errors if they make a mistake.

When I was about 20-22, my roommate got screwed by ATMs a few times, would withdraw money and either get nothing or get less than he asked for (despite the ATM saying he got it).
Once I asked for $200. I got nine $20 and a $100. I was a poor kid, apparently with questionable morals, I kept the extra $80.

Only one time.
I asked for $20 and got a $5. Damn! So I tried for $5 and got $20. The ATM machine and I were square, so I left. |

Yes. After racing at Laguna Seca about 6 years ago we went for supper at a seafood place on one of the piers. The cash machine never gave me my $200 but debited my account. It took 2 onths to get this sorted out and the money back in my account.
It was a massive headache at the time.

Once in Dublin Ireland I took the receipt, card , and then tried to take the cash but the machine (on the wall outside the bank)sucked the money back in. I went straight into the bank and they said I had done everything in the wrong order They refused to sort it out there and then, saying they only reconciled the machine on Wednesdays( it was a Monday and I was going home that night)..it took me weeks to sort it out, phone calls and letters to my English bank and to those lazy Irish bastards. But eventually I got my money back .
