have you moved because of neighbors?
Has anyone else sold their house and moved simply because of their neighbors?
Let me start off by saying I love my house. I've remodeled it and made it what I wanted. It fits me perfectly, is in a good location, easy access to everything, yard is small enough to not take an entire weekend to maintain. I've made it what I wanted it to be. I love it here. There's only one problem. My neighbors. We all get along fine (except for one house), we're all friendly enough, they all take care of their property (except the one), that's all great. Except they...all...smell. You can't even walk outside without being hit in the face with the aroma of...peoples habits. We've been having gorgeous weather the past few weeks and I'm the type that likes to open my windows when it's nice outside. The problem is that I can't. Because of every one of these people's smells. This didn't used to be a problem. It just started last summer. If it's not the vaping clouds from the glaring neighbors upwind (which is so bad it has coated the side of my house and windows with their juice because they're constantly on the hunt for the biggest cloud), it's the god awful smell of terrible laundry soap and dryer sheets being wafted into the air from peoples laundry. It is so bad I have been looking at property outside the city to move to because I can't deal with these smells. Is this a new thing or has everyone dealt with the smells of neighbors forever? I'll admit I grew up in the country so the smell of pig and cow doesn't bother me but the smell of people...ugh. Maybe it's because I quit smoking that now I can smell everything but this terrible. Sorry for the rant but what does a person do besides move? I hate keeping my house closed up and I work from home so there is no getting away from it. And before anyone says it, I use unscented everything so I can't possibly be any worse than them. But I digress. Am I the only one who has this problem? Now you kids get off my lawn!! |

If you can smell your neighbours there's something wrong.
Is it all of them or just the one?

Do you get migraines?
Could it be Hyperosmia? Hyperosmia can be brought on by and indicate some other underlying medical issues. Auto immune, Lyme. If the sensitivity to odors is recent, like not last week, but also not something that has been an issue in years past you may wanna go see your Doc.

I definitely feel your pain!!
I have a neighbor right beside me that moved in about a year ago. 6 dogs, trashed yard, bunch of beat up cars being repaired in the driveway, constantly burning household garbage. WTF!!! Bangs around his garage at 2/3 in the morning, music blasted.. just zero consideration...i don't get it... People are obliviously to anything other then themselves... I really wanna go over in beat his a$$ but that wouldn't be very neighborly... One last thing why must your friends park in my f in yard...and fly the our neighborhood (posted 25mph) f in rude people...doesn't matter how many times you ask them not to... Btw I'm only 43 so it's not like I'm an old crushy dude. But I'd never disrespect any of my neighbors... Last edited by freeform911; 05-05-2019 at 07:39 PM.. |

I also smell my neighbors dryer sheets - they have several kids so they are always doing laundry. I actually kind of like it but I’m weird. They also smoke. I developed a good relationship with them- I think this is the best way for them to be more considerate. Once they get to know you they will be more aware of you and what they do (If they are normal). There are some people simply do not care about anyone but themselves. It’s baffling.

Moving outside the city is probably your only solution, since they all smell. If you move to a place in close proximity of other people, the same problem has a good chance of occurring.

![]() My neighbors are quiet. Too quiet. They have 4 kids and they are NEVER outside. 15 years and they never set foot in their backyard. Weird. When we do interact, the wife has foot in mouth disease...

For the OP ->. Yes we did move away after a very LOUD couple (voices, TV, stereo) their four very loud screaming little kids and a trampoline moved in right behind us. Then all the neighborhood kids would be invited over to jump and get excited, with the inevitable crying injury. This started in the Spring and went every day and evening unti Late Fall. Forget about opening a window in the summer at any hour. After two miserable summers and several abortive attempts to go talk to them we found a house and moved. Hopefully a def couple bought our old place.

I felt your pain. We sold a house we loved partly because of noise. When I retired and spent all day at home I realized there is a lawnmower, leaf blower, or weed whacker running somewhere within earshot from early morning to after sundown. We chose peace and quiet over our beautiful home.
No regrets.

Build a tall azz fence with perrenial aromatic flowers/lilacs on the property line...OR...get a big commercial fan aimed at their property, and blow it back in their faces.

Yes we did . When we moved from FL. to Marrietta GA. we purchased what we thought was going to be our retirement house . Beautiful house in a typical neighborhood it even had a detached 3 car garage . But houses on both sides of us were rental property .
I have nothing against renters there are a variety of reasons why people rent. But I have a big problem with people that don't respect other people's property . Over the years we had kids/dogs/bikes/toys/garbage etc. scattered on our property . I nicely asked MANY times to please do this stuff on your property . One time my wife and I are sitting on our back deck and the neighbors kid is shooting birds at our bird feeders !!! We went through this for years with many families being evicted and the houses being trashed . As my wife and I came closer to retiring we decided we had enough of this crap and moved to the country . We now have 2.5 acres in the north Georgia mountains that we absolutely love . It is quiet and peaceful all the time . We have no regrets on moving . |

I also have the wonderful ability to NOT smell certain smells. Namely skunk. A skunk could spray me in the face and I wouldn't know it. Absolutely no scent to them whatsoever. ![]() |

To answer your question, no.
We have one neighbor now that lives behind us. He has two adult sons (mid 30s) that have moved back home. They both smoke, and the parents don't want that in the house, so the kids go to the back yard to smoke. They seem to have an totally alternating schedule. They are never out there together, so it is like having a constant smoker in the back yard. The good news is they are quite a way from our house, and the only time it really STINKS is when I am in my back yard in that part of the yard, or in my driveway or garage if the wind is blowing the right way. I suggested to my wife we put our compost pile in that part of the yard, but she said there is too much shade from the trees over there so the compost is still on their end of the property, but quite a ways from their house. I can only hope when the wind blows just right and they are out there stinking up the world with cigarettes, the rotting grass can drift up their nose. Of course a smoker likely can't smell it.

sounds like your neighbors might wind up on the news as one of those people that have kids locked in the bedroom and chained to the bed.

me and my wife have same problem with perfume/cologne. some will cause my sinus to start draining and can give me a sore throat. I don't understand why people make others smell that crap, especially when you go to some place a movie and people are sitting right next each other.

I'm just the opposite. My wife and I have such a great neighbor, that we would factor that in if we were ever to consider moving. I'm out of the country the majority of the time and they take care of our house while we are gone.
The dad is a former NFL defensive back, the son helps my grandson with his baseball, they cut our grass, pick up packages off our porch and have generally watched after our place for the last 6 years. They are the best neighbors you could possible have. Sorry for the highjack.
