I mean...... hadn’t this groom previously spent time with his future in-laws?

Seems like he would either have seen this coming,

Or they were just stunting and it backfired on everybody.

Or the groom needed a reason and they have him one, as mentioned.

That was my thought too, didn't he see this coming? Maybe it was the straw that broke the camels back, or maybe he just had enough. Who knows

Yes, it was quite probably stunting.

Maybe times have changed, or I'm a bit of a throwback, or...

When I was contemplating marrying my wife of now 33 years, I went to her father and asked his permission to do so before I even proposed to her. We had a wonderful visit (he knew me quite well by then anyway) and became lifelong friends.

When you get married, at least the "old fashioned way", you are actually joining two extended families. At least that's how it used to be. Maybe today, as spread out as families sometimes get, that's a lot harder to maybe impossible. Who knows - maybe it was the first time they had ever met. Still, though, no way to begin a (hopefully) life-long commitment.

Like they say, "Happy wife, happy life".

I'm calling "Unhappy wife, we END your life!" on this one. I'da bailed as well.

And yes, it is kind of like "Meet the Fokkers" but also like "Along came Polly".

Well said Jeff. Future groom (next Feb I'll be Father of bride) asked permission last fall. Nice guy, fortunately my daughter is likely a better judge of character than I.

When she was in H.S. I had a thick, short oak bat, affectionately called the 'boyfriend bat'. Never had to use it, but she made her boyfriends aware that it existed.

Maybe the groom and bride lived far away from her family and didn't have much contact? I'm just thinking if this was my first real exposure to the family, I might walk as well.

My theory: at the bachelor party a stripper/hooker gave the groom to be a BJ of a lifetime ! He mentally compared the fiance's technique ( probably not too good ) to the strippers ( outstanding ) and he said I'm out of here !!!

If there isn't contact with the family then why would it matter?

My Daughter doesn't need my help in the routine of life...her mother and I raised her to manage her life, make her own decisions and be responsible for them.

Her boyfriends, the ones I have met (she is an adult), have been fine young men. The last thing she would have wanted from me was some macho bravo sierra where they were concerned.

Ponderous.

However, if she needed, needs, my help, I'll need to throttle back her mother, who'll make William Wallace look like a software programmer as she pillages whatever ill has befallen her daughter.

Just the way it is.

Quick Sea Story:

My youngest older sister was/is very good looking...in HS as a Sophomore she dated a Senior: Letterman in three sports, good dude, did all the right meet and greet with my parents when they started dating. I was in the 8th grade and knew who this guy was.

A month or so in to their relationship, maybe six weeks, Ace pulls up to the ranch for a date with my sister and decides to honk the horn on his car to call my sister out for the date.

My sister gets up to go, says good-bye to the family. Happy.

My father says nope, stay right here, I'll be back in a minute.

Tough to tell the amount of time lapse, but soon Ace and my father walk in: Ace asks my mother how she is doing, weather, dogs ok, how are the horses, what time would you like Barbara hone?

Off they went.

Nobody honked here either...that was my one peccadillo.

I had no sisters, and no kids, so I have no first hand experience of that side of the fence.

Again back in the olden days when I was youngun, I had bumped into a chick i knew from high school. She gave me her phone number and at our house we only had two phones, one in the living room, one in the parents bedroom. So if I want to talk to a girl, off to the parents bedroom, and sit in a chair in the corner and chat on a phone attached to a wall.

We decided to go on a date and I would pick her up. My brother was wheeling and dealing a little back then in VWs, and first I picked her up in a Karmann Ghia that was fairly new, second date in a Karmann Ghia convertible, then 10 years old VW bug, then I showed up in a Volkswagen Westfalia camper van. Her dad said nope, go get one of your many other cars. Dang it.

While I was in college, I lived at home and commuted to classes. An hour drive each way. I did not hang around campus much after class so my social life with my peers was zilch. Most of the girls I knew that were my age were off at college out of town so I dated a lot of high school girls. I was very young looking for my age and could easily pass for high school. When picking up a date and talking to the dad I would volunteer up front that I was a "sophomore" or a "junior" not saying anything about in college. They just assumed I was still in high school. Never got called on that thank goodness. I was Caspar Milquetoast anyway so they had nothing to worry about.
