I don't even think AC was an option on my first car and I did not get it on my next two either. Here is what I drove in high school. Was a great beach car and never got stuck in the sand.

This can quickly become the Monty Python Skit, the Four Yorkshiremen but.....

I never once went to a school that was air conditioned. And that includes Texas, Alabama, and Oklahoma schools, as well as some in Hawaii with no heat and for sure no AC.

Growing up I was in the 10th grade before we had an air conditioned house. I drove un-airconditioned cars until 1991. The reason I sold my beloved 1974 914 2.0 that I bough new, was my wife said she would not go on any more road trips with me in the Porsche. I bought the 911 and it had some AC, but not great. That has been fixed.

My grandparents talked about the house where my dad was born. One room, single wall construction, and they paid $50 for it. My back yard shed is a better building. In the summer it was like the attic, and then grandma got to fire up the wood burning stove to cook dinner. No electricity, and the water was outside with a hand pump.

Sure anyone can survive without AC, but in my opinion it is the best invention since electricity!

Several times over the years, I've thought, it would be fun to get a bug to have as an extra car that I could mess around with. I do occasionally see bugs around, but the climate here has kept me from doing it.

It was not bad having a bug in SE Texas, just don't go out in the middle of the day.

Back OT, if he is doing a 1 year fellowship, he is probably not going to have time to drive around much. Some of his attendings may work out of other facilities too though, so he probably will need some wheels.

I just looked on a map where those apartments are. No way in hell he is walking to work, none. Do they have a shuttle?

Visit in October. The weather is usually pretty nice then. After that you get into cold humidity. It can be miserable too.
