Possible Macan Purchase

My wife really wants a Macan. She doesn't ask for much but has been hinting at trading in or selling her Lexus for a while now. We drove a 2015 S at the Porsche dealer today. She was practically giddy after driving it. The PO bought it at this dealer and they've done all of the services. One owner, pretty loaded with PASM, park assist, adaptive cruise, lane change something or other, 21" wheels, sport chrono, premioum package plus. List new was over $73k. She loves it. Really well cared for, looks new inside. Drove great. I'm really impressed with the way they drive. She also loves the color combo, Gray over black. We then drove a new 2018 2.0 that I did not like as well. In sport mode it was ok but in normal model it took a while to spin up and get in the powerband.

The part I'm struggling with is it is higher miles than I'd ideally like to buy. It has 64k on it. They would sell it around $34k. She doesn't drive much. 25k on her Lexus in 4 years. We'd probably put a few more on this. It is out of any warranty and an aftermarket service contract is crazy expensive.

Anyone with any opinions or experience owning one into the 100k range in mileage? Am I crazy to buy out of warranty or should be bite the bullet and look for a newer one and pay quite a bit more.

Sharp ride, but you might want to shop around. You should be able to source a CPO 2016 S for $35k-$38k, which will give you the remainder of the 6 year/100k mile factory warranty. YMMV...

Too bad you're not closer. I have a 2018 Macan S, I am trying to sell. They are great cars but I have an Audi RS3 on order and need it gone. Honestly, if you aren't used to all those nanny controls, they will be turned off most of your time. I don't have adaptive cruise but do have the parking assist: it is very sensitive. A dip in the road, it beeps. Being in a drive-through beeping constantly. The lane change thing is auditory; if the radio is on, you will not hear the beeping when you cross the lines. I do like the blind spot warning; it is a flashing light in the mirror to let you know someone is there. If you put on your signal and a car is in the space the light flicker increases. That being said: for an suv the Macan S can pick up and go. That base 2.0 doesn't. It is very comfortable on long drives and the gas mileage on those long drives is better than I would expect at about 26-27mpg. Around town I drive in sport mode exclusively: it sounds better and the throttle response is better.

I can't speak to longevity because mine has 19K miles on it but I don't see any oil consumption or any other red flags at this point. Good luck in your search.

A second thought: Would the dealer offer an extended warranty?

We did that for 2017. My wife sold her Infinity G35X and we ordered a new Macan to fit her needs. She loves the car. One of my PCA buddies mentioned his wife liked the Macan. We invited them over and we had his wife drive ours, and she fell in love. They bought a used one, and she loves it. I saw him Saturday and he commented on what fun they are to drive.

The lane assist is annoying, but the blind spot indicator is handy. We ordered ours with the Apple connect. Plug in the phone, and it can put the display of the phone on the center screen, and you can have the maps as a GPS that is always updated. We did not want the Porsche GPS that has to be updated regularly.

It has been a great car.

In looking at the CPO program, it seems like this one we are looking at should qualify, I've sent them a message asking why it doesn't have it.

Please don't pay that kind of money for that kind of mileage. There are much better deals out there. And you don't need to be close- shipping cars is dirt cheap.

This is taboo on an enthusiast forum and I know there is added value to a service history but you could channel your inner Doug DeMuro and buy one from CarMax with their extended warranty.

When I'm buying a used car (or on occasion, a new car) I buy the best one I can find, regardless of where it is in the country. I either fly in and drive it home, or get it shipped. Probably done that 20 or 30 times. Done it for motorcycles, too.

I also wouldn't buy anything that new without a CPO warranty.

i've heard SC is beautiful this time of year. i would travel for the right car. i bet they make some killer fried chicken in SC.

Obviously it costs the dealer to perform the inspection, do the work needed to make the car qualify, and pay Porsche for the CPO warranty. A Porsche dealer might be prohibited (at least if he follows the rules) from raising the price of the car to make it a CPO. So, can they include it for their asking price or not? Even if they did, you're only getting 2 years of coverage- then what? Instead of negotiating for 2 years of CPO, I'd suggest finding out what combination of discount you can get on the car and/or the Platinum service contract Porsche sells. Maybe it lists for $6,000 and you can get it for $4,000, as an example. Let's say you get 5 years and enough miles for $4,000- it's not money down the drain, as you'll probably recover a chunk of that in paid for claims. You probably won't get it all, but you easily could, and you might avoid a catastrophic repair bill. Your net cost of the service contract is what you pay for it minus what it pays for instead of you.

How long would you keep this car? Let's say it's only 3-4 years- have you considered the net cost of a lease vs buying, then selling? How would you pay for it if you bought it?

I've never had to deal with an non-Porsche warranty like something from Carmax but I've been very impressed with both new Porsche and CPO Porsche warranty. I wouldn't by a newer Porsche without one. At least it gets you past the first 2 years of ownership so you have a feel for how the long term reliability will be.

As has been mentioned above, wives (women) seem to really love them. My wife does NOT care about cars at all. Likes to keep them seemingly forever. Yes, opposites DO attract. We bought her a new Macan GTS (didn’t like the seats in the Turbo) last year. She absolutely LOVES it, her words. In 35 years of marriage she’s never uttered those words about a car. Personally, I wouldn’t own one of these w/o some sort of warranty. Hers does drive great and is a blast when she lets me drive it.

My wife was almost afraid to admit it but she really did like it. She didn't realize how much nicer to drive than her Lexus it would be. She loves the looks but I was surprised to hear her say how much she liked the sporty feel of how it handled. I've got a shop full of cars, I can't deny her one she really loves. I thought it was amazing as well. I'm continuing to look. I'm also going to drive the new Acura RDX today to get a comparison. I've read great things about them and seen a few at the auto show when they were being released.

I would look at the SQ5 as well but she won't allow an Audi. She had an old Allroad that sucked her dry. I'll check out the BMW.

They're really nice... I get loaner 2.0/3.0 S when my 991 is in for warranty stuff, and I even like the poverty spec one, but I totally would get an S or better yet GTS would be the pick of the litter. What i like most about it, is it feel "RWD" (and is, most of the time, there is a dash gizmo that shows you where the power goes), and the dash and seating is 100% porsche.

I'm with the crowd though, at that price I'd want less miles, or I'd pay a bit more for a CPO.
A door panel set (they warped on my car) is over $3000. A camera or PCM that goes bye bye will be $$$$$. I'd try to get a 3-4y CPO and resell it when that expires... Modern cars are just too costly w/o a warranty now.

PS: we also drove the SQ5 and that thing is awesome too, it pulls and the interior is better than all others. But every other car on the road is a Q5. the macan is only 1 in 4 ;-)

I spoke with the sales manager today and asked why this isn't a CPO car. He said it costs them about $4,500 between labor to inspect and cost with Porsche to do CPO and on these older ones he can't justify it or they get priced too high. This one would qualify based on miles and ownership.

On a side note, drove a new RDX over the lunch hour. For the $'s, it is really nice and while not big, is roomier than the Macan. I don't know if she'll get the same "feeling" of being in a sporty/luxury ride but I'm going to have her drive one. We both have had Acura's in the past and they were super reliable and well built cars for us. I had an 05 MDX and she had the same year TL. Both went to well over 150k miles with no major issues.
