Meteorite

Anyone here an expert or have one or more? I like ‘em and would love to give one as a gift to my son but am a complete noob.

I used to occasionally look at a program about meteorite hunters. They were worth some bucks.

Depending on your location try a Gem and Mineral Show or you can swing by Quartzite Arizona during the winter months.

Like Marv said, I know they can cost a few bucks.

There are lots of them on ebay... not pricey, either.

I would wonder about the authenticity of the items on eBay. I'm sure there are plenty that are meteorites, but then I suspect there are also some that are not.

I've always wanted one myself, but I don't want to just buy one. I'd rather find one. Unfortunately, it's not really that simple.

Finding one is not likely unless you spend a lot of time searching. I bought one from a guy that came and talked to our Astronomy club at the local planetarium. He discussed how to know the difference from a rock and a meteorite. It is cool to own a hunk of metallic material that is billions of years old from and not from Earth. It is truly extraterrestrial. Mine is pretty small, a little smaller than a golf ball. Big ones are expensive.

Adam Savage had a recent build on his show "Savage Builds" where he forged a sword from a meteorite. It was an interesting episode.

technically, it's not THAT hard to find one, but then most folks aren't interested in micro-meteorites.
