Taycan Turbo and Turbo S - WTF?!?
I don’t follow modern Porsches at all, so when I read an article about the Taycan I was seriously confused for a bit.
Yes, it’s Porsche’s full electric, Tesla competition. I thought I knew that. But then I read that there are 2 models, the Taycan Turbo and the Taycan Turbo S. Huh?? That is totally bizarre. I can’t even imagine how anyone thought that naming an electric, (obviously) non-turbo car a “Turbo” is a good idea. That being said, I guess 95% of buyers won’t see the issue and will tell people how fast their Taycan is because of the “Turbo.” And they can one-up Tesla. For all the tech Tesla’s have, they aren’t turbo-charged! So take that Elon! |

Agreed... Stupid decision but the top of the line 911 was always the turbo so maybe that's their angle.

In Porsche speak, Turbo is a trim level now since all the 911s and 718s besides some GT models are turbocharged.

So where's the turbocharger?

Calling a car with no turbo a turbo is silly, especially for Porsche.
I guess they could call one an S and the other the RS, but then the R seems a little silly too. I guess they couldn't have named one an S and then the other the SS. That probably would have been bad.

Hey, they call the car a Tyacan, that is a really stupid name.
Then they stick Turbo on it. The marketing department is in charge of selling it, and I sure hope they have no influence in the engineering of it. I really wish Porsche would get away from the silly names and go back to numbers. I have been a Porshe owner since 1974. I still have to stop and think before I say Cayman or Cayenne. Porsche has great vehicles, but horrible name conventions.

Many many years ago, I had someone observe that when I shifted gears in my electric RC race gear that I was putting it into "turbo mode".
I often get in arguments when some one asks turbo vs supercharger for forced induction. Well...for forced induction the turbo is a supercharge. It is a turbine driven supercharge. The question isn't turbo vs supercharge but what drive type for the supercharger. Anyway... Back before they figured out to drive a high RPM centrifugal supercharger by an exhaust turbine they were using the turbine to raise torque output of the engine through a transmission to the output shaft of radial airplane engines. High RPM turbine to low RPM shaft, low RPM shaft to high RPM Compressor. Someone got the bright idea high RPM turbine to high RPM compressor. And thus was born the Turbine driven Supercharger. Shortened to Turbo Supercharger. Shortened to Turbocharger. When it comes to computers, the practice of overclocking specific cores while leaving the cores around it inactive for thermal balance is known as turboing for higher clockspeed. Taycan Turbo and Turbo S - WTF?!?
Back in the Stone Age of computing, the first games played at a certain speed based on CPU clock speed. Later CPUs would make the game play at way too fast of a pace. So computers had a button to slow the cpu process speed to make the games playable. No one wants a button called slow down, so they called it turbo mode. The computer was at full speed in turbo mode, and slowed down at game speed. Pure marketing.

It would be interesting if they programmed driver selectable optional turbo-esque lag/acceleration modes into the newer cars- for example "935 mode" Persponally, I'd keep mine in 924 NA mode.

Taycan, Macan, Panamera
These are strange nonsense words that don't fall off my tongue easily. I'm not the target market anymore, and Porsche and the VW group don't care if I care that they've designated electric vehicle models with a Turbo or a Turbo S to delineate the various trim levels....

I think the model names are cool and they've done a good job of making them all sound like they're from the same family, and the 911 will always be 911, so it's all good. I'm in prime new-Porsche demographic, although I suspect many others in this thread (on this forum for the most part) are not.

Like the post above mentioned the Macan was originally going to be called the Cajun. The Germans engineers and workers could not pronounce the hard J and they kept calling it the Cayoon. So the name was changed.
