Driver distracted by the dash...absolutely nightmarish.

I cannot believe that our illustrious "safety police" even allow these touch screen interfaces. One must, by default, take one's eyes off the road to touch and scroll through the menus and commands. Ingrained, systemic, built-in "distracted driving". Give me tactile knobs and buttons and levers, thank you very much, when my primary responsibility is driving. I don't want to be forced to take my eyes off of the road to manipulate something that I must see rather than feel.

I hate how the new Mustang GT has this. I considered getting one until I saw that. I hate it in BMW too. I don’t mind it for some reason in the AMG cars…seems to fit with the overall interior look in the AMG I guess
I have no issue with digital displays like in the 992 and other Porsches and even VW. Porsche designed it well and it looks integrated like it belongs, not like a glued on iPad At least some makers like Audi still include a few buttons…Mazda too

Video screen(s) instead of analogue gauges? No thanks.

Laws against using cell phones while driving, which I agree with. But this is okay? I just don't get it. But then, I'm just a crusty old bastid who thinks fondly of analog dashes filled with black & white stewart-warner gauges giving information on the vehicle's operation.
Maybe today's young folks think it's cool to go all touch screen with star trek graphics?

No I don’t think that’s it. The best example is the gen 7 GTI vs the gen 8 GTI (or Golf R) While much of the criticism of the mk8 is overblown, the general impression is that fans of the car are upset. Having to navigate several digital menu screens in order to adjust hvac is frustrating and dangerous and the people have spoken loudly against it
The fact is VW is moving to all electric and the digital controls are deemed more appropriate and also cut costs across the product line because almost every model is now using the same screen and tech…..I think it is the manufacturer’s intention that you control all features via voice control….I haven’t seen any car maker get this right yet and until they do, these digital screens will remain a source of danger and frustration Can it look ok and be useful? Yea. I love what McLaren does with it and the new lotus emira (last ICE lotus), etc….

I suspect the digital dash is just to keep the new young drivers that grew up with digital technology and can't go 5 minutes without looking at their phones.
The Teslas have a HUGE center console screen. Almost every car now has a touch screen. It is a problem and we can only hope more accident preventing tech will follow. Automatic braking and lane hold will help. I see cars swerving out of their lanes all the time, so fool driver is busy texting or reading email. It is worse than drunk driving.

One day there won't even be a steering wheel. All input will be thru some kind of digital interface.

The motive couldn't be cost saving, could it? Never, not possible. Not in automotive.
The sad part is, this is easy to fix. A couple of knobs (radio, HVAC temp. wipers) cover the vast majority of the day-to-day functions. I hate new cars. The dash on my brother's A6, and his 911 are totally distracting. Honda has a temperature adjustment where a 'normal' car would have a volume knob. This crap is sold as 'improvements' to driving. A digital dash is not a problem, lots of them are very good (and customizable), but the embedded functions in a tree menu are garbage.

Hate those dashes. So friggin cheap looking. Like somebody bought a 'panysonik' at the swap meet and screwed it to their dash with some L brackets from the hardware store. Just awful.
Also hate not having dials for the distraction issue mentioned. Noted that in the Tesla it is very distracting to do just about anything other than steer.

For the longest time, Porsches were manufactured without cupholders. Designers did not want to encourage drinking and driving. Seriously.

The rpm/speedo dash can be automatically switched over during burnouts to 10 gauges displaying individual tire temp, wheel slip, traction control applied to each wheel, pending emails, IMs received, upvote likes/dislikes ratio, number of potential pedestrians in proximity.

I rented an Audi several years back. It was probably a 2017 or 2018. It had, IIRC, 2 round "guages". One of the gauges was, I think, an analogue tachometer, and the other was a speedo. I think you could customize the space between the gauges and the bottom half of the gauge on the right (or maybe the whole thing). It wasn't bad, although I'm not sure I'd want to own one when it goes bad which in eventually will. ![]()
