Windows 8 was a MASSIVE OVERREACTION by Microsoft to the Apple iPad. They (incorrectly) believed that everyone would abandon laptops and desktops for tablets and touch screens. Windows 8 was probably the single greatest inefficiency-creator ever unleashed on US business (by the private sector). Windows 10 is better, but not great. But MS can't monetize you nearly as well on 7 as they can on 10.

I figured I would learn it back then. I just built a new mega computer, and after 30 year of promises, plug and play is finally working. The components don't even come with CD or DVDs anymore, or even a manual. Plug in the part, and Windows takes care of it.

The one "feature" I HATE the most with Win10 is local networking. Virtually every update will break the local network sharing. I have 4 computers, and it is just me. I don't want no stinking passwords or log ins to share files on the computers all in my home office. I will get it all working smooth, and Win10 updates, and each computer turns off the file sharing. I cuss, and turn it all back on.

The other pain with Win 10 is the stupid bloatware. Microsoft thinks everyone is a college student playing games on the laptop. My new computer is is a monster, and weighs a ton. It has 5 drive running as a 15TB RAID 5, and two M.2 drives that are 2 TB each. It has two huge video cards, and 256 Gig of RAM. It would be a killer game machine, but I had to work hard to remove all the silly games Microsoft installs as default. And no, I don't want and social media or the phone app, or the people app.
You need to update your computer build thread, my son was geeking out over it.

My 16 y/o is in the process of accumulating parts to build his first gaming PC over winter break. I think he is only waiting on his power supply to arrive, the case arrived yesterday.

It is very satisfying building your own machine. Yours is insane!

curious what you're spending. for three new pc's, updating mine to W10, 3 monitors and some security upgrades my guy wanted $7k. $3k of it was labor! Got it down to $5.5k by cutting some hocus pocus stuff out but still feel like i'm being charged like some large 30 person office.

Friggin awful.

Mu understanding. Windows 10, underneath the new (Well, Windows 7) interface was really still Windows 8.

I never had a machine with Windows 8. I have had exactly ONE windows computer with a touch screen. I specifically buy non-touch screen laptops. Maybe one day, but not today.

The closest to a Windows Tablet I might consider is a Lenovo Yoga.

We don't need any hardware, except for additional RAM on the server.($48) We use F-Secure for our security software, and that won't change. So right now, we're just looking at labor $ to migrate the machines to Win 10. The company we use is exceedingly affordable, so constantly booked up. We've had to wait to install this years tax software until they could fit us in on their schedule. Normally, we've already got it installed at this point and doing projections for clients, so we're a little behind the 8 ball. A far as final cost, we should probably come in under a grand. I'll let you know how it shakes out.

That is awful. Did you at least get a reach-around?

Not even an 'attaboy'!

They are telling me most of my machines won't be fast enough for the new windows. so we're going with quality stuff like solid state HD, etc. The labor is what was surprising to me. And they don't have to do anything with my tax software! Literally just quickbooks, T-Value and a couple other small programs.

To be clear:

Win7 is not going to "die" or anything, it just means it won't be supported or patched unless you subscribe to an expensive support model. I suspect they WILL continue to patch it for big breaches only, they still do XP after all !! (things like Spectre, big vulnerabilities)

Honestly if your PC works OK, that's not a bad thing. MS patches have been so $hitty and poorly tested that them no longer pushing that crap to you is not a bad thing... Win10 is OK but they have a lot of ways to force you to upgrade, and all the patches roll up month to month, so you cannot opt out of anything anymore, like it or not. Unless you are tech savvy, you risk getting stuff jammed down your pipe that hoses your PC or certain programs and "good luck with that"...

What do you mean by big breaches?

I'm very happy with the performance of my PC running Windows 7 Pro and do not want to change. Ever, really... unless I have to.

I don't do any online banking on this thing, ordering from Amazon is about as dangerous as I get. I have free anti-virus, anti-malware, and "cleaner" programs that I run (scans) on the regular. I've been trouble-free.

Have been thinking about going with LifeLock since before I heard about MS dumping W7. Now they are including Norton in their basic package. Will probably do it soon.

Am I most likely okay for the foreseeable future?

I mean historically, when there is a big vulnerability that tends to make the news ("Wannacry" comes to mind), MS released patches for all their OSes including the old ones on which they had dropped support. When Win7 sunsets you probably will still get those patches once in a while. You can get extended support for Win7 as an enterprise but as a private party that's unlikely and $$$...

I'm not a fan of Win10's bedside manners but you may want to upgrade in the end just for convenience...

Even the early versions of Win10 will soon be reaching EOL (no more free support/updates), despite it being "sold" as the last evolution of Windows that was being created/released. It's all a racket with Apple and MS...just pick your poison.
Personally, Win10 Pro works for me just fine. If you are OS shopping/upgrading and you want the most control/options/performance, and "future-proofing" possible, maybe look at the Win10 Pro "Workstation" version. YMMV...

Some big cloud servers were bot-attacked using game consoles, I believe:

Although it was supposedly just a DDOS, those clouds do contain financial, business, medical etc.

Big companies have all been breached as well.

Bad advice. Breaches are a big business, on any OS. Upgrade before that happens or pull the network.

Not being much of a computer expert, makes me wonder how is it that Windows 10 works great for some and is a nightmare for others? Installation glitch? Operator error? What?

Some people don't deal with change very well.

It is the loose nut behind the mouse. Win 10 can be customized to fit your needs. My old computer was working fine, but needed more POWER so I upgraded the hardware. Clean install, then start installing the programs I use. I did not want to migrate for various reasons.

I like it when they drop support, no more auto updates......

It will take a while for the W7 end of life to be noticeable . Eventually things will stop working. I have an old XP laptop that I use for my car software . For example, I can only find one web browser that is functional. Eventually this will probably happen to 7. thank goodness for linux. Free and needs minimal resourses.
