I think the “thin blue line” (and red line, and yellow line, and similar variations) are technically violations of the US Flag Code, well-meaning though they may be...

“The flag should never have placed on it, or attached to it, any mark, insignia, letter, word, number, figure, or drawing of any kind...”

He is choosing to fly an historic iteration. A bit presumptuous of you to imply he thinks there is something wrong with the current one. What do you think is wrong with the current one?

From the OP:

Mine have now become tattered and I was looking at replacements.

I think the current US flag is the official flag of the United States. It's our flag, there is nothing wrong with it in my opinion and I'm curious why anyone would want to fly some other flag instead. Hence, my question.

The 13 star flag is part of our history , I see no reason why it can't be flown proudly . I don't think there is ANY under lying intent other than to replace tattered old flags . Lighten up folks it's not a nazi flag or a communist flag it's a historical US flag .

From Flag Code

Official United States flags are always considered living, active flags. From the Betsy Ross flag to the present 50-star flag, any flag that at some time was the official flag is still considered a living flag to be accorded all due respect.

The versions I've seen of those flags are not red, white, and blue so, technically, they are not the official symbol referenced by the code. That's my take, anyway.

The Night shines with a 1000 stars for the world to see
The same Stars that grace the American Flag, the symbol that we are free

Upon the back drop of the purest blue those stars seem to glisten and shine
Praised by the Love of so many people and the blessings of the divine

Those Red and White stripes hold special meaning of dedication and purity, because many shed Blood for the Ultimate reason
That no one bows to Tyranny.

And in that Flag that waves so proudly are the lives sacrificed for the cause defending
the concept of human freedom challenged in so many wars

Our heroes rest inside of history of stories yet untold
Let us pledge allegiance to it a History yet to unfold.

That presumption is completely in your head. I asked a fairly simple question and you heaped your own implications onto it. I just ask why he chose the 13 star flag vs the current flag. I have no idea why you got your panties in a wad over that.

I put one up on the wall of my Dad's barn in Massachusetts, and I particularly like to see them flown on the fourth of July. FWIW, people who grew up in one of the original Colonies will always lay claim to that flag. It is pretty natural, and a pride of place thing.

Fly it anyway.

I did not know that. The next time I need to re-flag the pole I'm going with the flag I was born under - 48 stars!

apparently some will say that flag is offensive because it's the flag of a time when slavery was common

As a Belgian I just find it funny that people can get upset over a flag, or even that a flag code exists.... most of the world get's confused at a Belgian flag and asks us why we put the German flag vertical ..

Bought this 3X5 flag in the early 70's as a souvenir when visiting there.
I still have it...it's never flown.

It was in the OP; his " become tattered."

A little throw-back to the founding flag. Kind of cool.

No doubt someone, somewhere will find a way to be . . .drumroll . . . offended. GASP!
