Oregon law forbids self pumping. I do request that the tank be topped, and sometimes the kid will comply.

On the plus side of this law, it probably reduces the number of credit card skimmer gadgets.

On the negative side, I don't have a clue how to use today's pumps...guess I should watch more carefully for when/if I go out of state.

It depends for me...

Most of those gas stations have the rewards programs now, so I use one of them on my diesel pickup. I wait until the tank is empty and then use the points I have hoarded up (for example I am sure I am up to $.60 off per gallon now) and put every single ounce of cheap fuel in that I can. I have not filled it up since at last the first week of march and still have 3/4 of a tank.

For the VW, I just go until it stops or I get gas splashed all over me. For the 911, the same thing, don't want gas all down the side of it.

For motorcycles I can tell by the sound. I usually go balls to wall and pull the handle all the way for the first few gallons then slow er up. If I am on a road trip on the bike my goal is to get the max gas in as possible as I have been out in the boonies on fumes and it can get stressful.

Man, this is funny, I used to do it too but after a few months of driving, I gave up and don't even noticed anymore. I thought I was the only OCD weirdo.

Depends on when it stops.

Which is closer? Dollars or gallons?

However, many times I barely look. But not always.

When I fill up a customer's car at work, I'll try and let the pump stop at a number like $49.99 to frustrate the office girls.

When I was in Oregon I did not know I was not allowed to pump my own gas like I have done since the early 1970s. The attendant about had a stroke when I grabbed the pump handle. Same thing happened to me in New Jersey.

I drove to Oregon several years ago. Didn’t know about that law either. I thought it was some panhandler trying to get me to pay him to pump my fuel.
I said “I got it”. His jaw dropped, then he recovered and said “Ah, sir, I see you’re from out of state...” then explained. We had a good laugh.
I apologized to the guy. Said it happens quite often.

Had my gas pumped in Israel (after starting to do it myself) and the attendant tried to overcharge by a factor of four. We were on fumes and pulled into a station in a sketchy neighbor in Hebron.

Got it worked out but left a bad impression.

Is that a trick question? I pump it until it clicks off. Pretty simple.

Is this a trick answer? I'm betting all your home outlet faceplate screws aren't perpendicular either

So, for whatever idiotic reason Oregon forbids you to pump your own gas (but allow it now), how will they justify the requirement for the attendant once the pandemic has passed?

You better pray your Porsche crest points to your valve stems, Mister!

I don't have to pray...nor do I have to go check them either. I sleep well just knowing they are

Gas purchasing got more complicated for me lately. My bank offers a 3% APR on checking account balances up to $25,000 if you use their debit card 12 times a month. I don't really trust debit cards - especially with $25k in the account - so I only use it in a few places, including my friend's gas station. So I'm watching the calendar and watching the gas gauge and the beer supply to make sure I use the card 12 times each month.
