I just lit a fire with a rock and steel.
I cannot believe that worked. I need to find some better tinder to nest the ember in.
I’m shocked. I love old school stuff. My wife is on a conference call. Running thru the house yelling, “honey, I made fire!” Was not appreciated. Haha. I have some natural fiber twine I’m gonna shred into a nest. Make it char-cloth. Oh yes! ![]()

Take a wad of lint from the lint screen in your drier after you've dried a bunch of towels. I suspect that'd work pretty well to get things going.
Very cool!

Amazingly well. Keep a ziploc sandwich bag of dryer lint and a mag striker in my pack. served me well many times. Jute cord is awesome. Even better if you can find parrafin dipped.

I’m impressed, that’s a caveman skill that I’d like to try.

Back in the days when film was still king and digital was a dream, the local boy scout troop would come in and pick up all the little plastic film cans, Stuff them with dryer lint, and then a squirt of lighter fluid. The put the cap on, and go off camping. Open that can, pull out a wad of soaked lint, and poof! gone.

Bugs got boring after a bit. Usually an ant hill was best because it provided lots of fast moving targets. Then you move to trash that you find laying around to see if you can create fire. If you burn old newspaper just enough to turn it black, and then hit it with a perfectly focused beam, it'll create flame. Normally, if you just hit it with the beam, it goes straight to ash with no flame. At least, that was my experience. Wood was harder to light up vs just turning it to charcoal from what I remember.

I used gasoline and gunpowder on anthills, as a kid.
(I found hundreds of .22 blanks spilled in an alley. Brought them home. My dad showed me how to open the cases and pour out the gunpowder. Had lots of fun with that. The things we were allowed to do back then!)
