Pilot dies in flight.

A passenger rises to the occasion, in a big way.

I just came across this story.

Once in the air, departing Miami on a charted king air plane the pilot has a heart attack and dies.

The video explanes the details of the passenger's little flying experience and shows the very calm and effective help from the team of Air Traffic Controllers that help him gain control of the plane. Help get him headed to a nearby airport. Then get him tuned into the controls enough to be able to fly to and land safely.

Crazy story.

Here a news story with the summary.

http://www.nbcnews.com/id/30190350/ns/us_news-life/t/passenger-lands-plane-after-pilot-dies/

It wasn't just a "passenger". Guy had a pilot license and 150 recent hours in a Cessna. I bet it paid off he was invited into the copilot seat and shown around by the pilot. Incredible job by the guy, on the return from his brothers funeral no less.

He ended up getting checked out in the same plane and flew it for years doing charity work.

Here's how to fly an upgrade version of that aircraft.

Last summer I went up with a friend and took the controls at around 3,000ft. It was a lot going on with stick and pedals and throttle, but with his coaching I got the basics down anyway in a few minutes. It all made sense and was very reactive to inputs. That said, while I could probably aviate/navigate/communicate a similar plane to an airport, I have no doubt I would crash hard despite anything someone was saying in my headphones.

That's not new posting... I saw that vid (or one just like it) several years ago.

The guy was/is a licensed pilot (single engine, tho), so it's not really 'miraculous'.

I wonder if the FAA did any investigation on the actual cause of the pilots death, and what his flight doctors exam showed and has other patients of that doc had any health issues.

To have the ticket to fly a King Aire takes more than the hobbyist flying his 140 or Cub.

One of the reasons retired airline pilots still fly free is in case of that unlikely scenario. Doubt it's ever happened on a commercial flight though..

^^^ that was a commercial flight. A charter but none the less a commercial flight. Also surprised that there was no co-pilot.

The beech KingAir is certified single pilot. Just like two seat biplane scenic tours are also "commercial" as long as the pilot has a current Commercial endorsement or even better an ATP they are good.

If anyone was to get some unexpected twin time, a King Air would be a great choice. Its a very easy and forgiving plane to fly.

That is true of almost all aircraft. Well maybe not a B-52 with 8 engines.

I flew in a Kingair plane many times in the mid 90's. There was always a copilot.

My business partner has many hours as copilot in the King Aire.

A couple of years ago asked if I still had the USB external 3.5 inch floppy drive. I dug through my closet and found it. He borrowed it to do some update to the King Aire. It was laughable, an aircraft with millions, and it uses a 3.5 inch floppy.

Kinda like the McLaren F1 that REQUIRES an old Compaq laptop to update it. Multi million dollar car, fantastic in every way, and a 20 year old Compaq to keep it running.

A B52 has barely enough rudder authority to take off under full power on 7 engines. This is part of the issue with re-engining the aircraft, especially if they wanted to go 4 high bypass engines.

I have seen a 747-400 do a single engine TOGO at Airventure years ago.
