Suggestion for Mods
Instead of closing useful and informative threads when they go off the rails, how about addressing the posters who send those threads off the rails?

Yes indeed... there are just a handful (both ends of the spectrum) who do this. Moving the threads over will allow those who wish to continue the nonsense to continue on. Closing threads which should simply be moved should be a last resort....as giving the "usual suspects" a pass....isn't working, despite recent efforts imo.
And kick Runnie out of the PARF band too ![]() Let his cobell ring loudly.... but over there ![]() |

There are a handful who seek an argument in discussions they enter and pose as experts in nearly every subject--especially a current event. Attention vampires.

Maybe they are experts...and cannot resist correcting gross ignorance. If others have more information or a different logic, they are always free to post that as well. Attempts to silence those one disagrees with always leaves a dilemma...who gets to decide which ideas are incorrect. It might well be yours.

No one wants to silence anyone... just take it where it belongs. We all know where to find the threads...
DD is trying to "moderate" these OT threads imo....it's the political junkies (a few on both ends of the spectrum) that insist upon selling their Amway here... If I am guilty....a time-out is called for too ![]() Good luck.... |

It seems we should be happy moderating ourselves
The mods here have come and gone. They very on and in EXTREME measurements. You dont like someone? Hit the ignore button and before ever done. Simple. This is not like the pinnacle of the world's best ideas here, albeit sometimes it is. There are trolls and paid trolls on every forum. Learn not to feed them, as they make a quarter for responding to each post. To your point I have always thought locking a thread is silly-what is actually being damaged? If a person is truly off the rails here (we have had a few) just dismiss them rather then disciplining us all. Most of us would appreciate it if a Mod did that.

My only real complaint around here is what I have seen as a marked downturn in politeness and civility. I've done my level best to try to treat others here politely, but some have made that very difficult at times. I'm ashamed of the fact that I've crawled down into that gutter with them on a few occasions. I've resolved to try not to get sucked in like that anymore, but I do have my breaking point. I'm working on it though. I wish others would do the same. To do that, of course, they would first have to acknowledge that they have a problem. Our "usual suspects" appear incapable of that.
There are a few people on this forum, on both sides of the political/ideological spectrum, who simply cannot respond to anyone in anything but a snarky, condescending manner. Our "usual suspects". I'm not sure how they think that behavior might reinforce their point - it has, of course, exactly the opposite affect, and has only succeeded in earning them their reputations as tiresome boors. I remember when the standard of behavior on these forums was to pretend we were in Wayne's living room, with his wife and kids present. A pretty easy standard to meet, really. And those who could not meet that standard were simply invited to leave. Those days are long gone. I've come to just ignore those guys. Not that I have them on "ignore" - I just skim over their nonsense and move on. Granted, yes, I have fired back at a few - not when they attacked me, but rather when they have gone after others who in no way deserved their childish attacks. No more. It's not my place. It's not worth it - they just dig in deeper in their unending quest to "win the internet" today. In the end, I just feel sorry for them, and whatever it is in their lives that drives them to turn to the internet to lash out at others. I just wish the moderators would deal with them, and return this to the "Wayne's living room" standard of discourse.

The amount of forum diarrhea has become staggering over the last few months.

It is oxymoronic to pick on the smell if we are in the same pot.

I agree with the OP. A big problem is that a small crew of PARFers who continually violate forum rules and deliberately try to stifle communication in the useful and informative threads by politicizing them and either getting them moved to PARF or closed.
I agree that some enforcement is needed. Last edited by RWebb; 06-04-2020 at 10:19 AM.. |

I understand the frustration of seeing an interesting thread closed. It happens to me too sometimes.
But this a very cool forum, free of charge, and we agreed to follow forum rules when we joined. Their playground, their rules. I have no problem with that. So, 1up for the mods from me. Wayne’s living room, excellent metaphor!

It seems to me that those who complain the most are the usual suspects. How can they not realize that when they post their opinion it cannot always be "useful and important information" and when those who see it differently post, it cannot always be "forum diarrhea". In fact, such an attitude foments a lot of the poor behavior here...and they are often the first to tot out the insults and name-calling. If one has their facts correct and makes a logical presentation, they should invite critique...as that is how most of us learn. If one's ideas cannot compete unless unchallenged, they must not be very good ideas.

The politicization of many topics in discussion here is already happening in the "real world". Doesn't have to be that way but that's reality and there goes those threads to PARF. So what PPOT turns into is the sanitized safe playground for all where we can dwell on Crocs, cars, planes, movies , food, travel etc. I'm fine with that.
Mods, keep up the good work but I do second unbanning the Raw'hide dude ! |
