"Offset" Wrenches ??

Maybe used on bolts in the first situation below - where the hole is too near the edge?

Anything that has a distributor in the back. 350, 318 are two that had really long runs where those wrenches would be useful.

Starter wrenches and distributor wrenches have a more serious offset. I can see where these wrenches would be an interesting alternative to straight box end wrenches, or a good helper in those places where a six point box end is so tight you can't move enough to get another bite. Just whip this baby on it an get that 1/16th of a turn you need.

You'd be surprised - possibly the difference in R&R'ing the nut or bolt quickly -or- spending half the day finding a work-around. There are many various types / styles of offset wrenches, some ratcheting. some where the offset is greater or more angled then 'average'.

I have a crazy looking offset, angled, dropped, box-end wrench designed for John Deere in-line diesels to remove the starter inside bolt. I bought it when I was in High school working part-time for the local JD dealer. I've had it ever since. I cannot tell you how many other times that I've needed that wrench to successfully remove fasteners.

maybe if there is a fastener near a obstacle..it allows more clearance for your handhold?

The good thing, though, is that once they get that big, standard and metric pretty much interchange. I think by about the time you're at a 17-19mm or an 11/16"-3/4".

You don't need an offset wrench until you need one.

I always thought of offset wrenches as like this type.

I have just one of those, and I use it for the brake pressure switches that make the tail lights come on for my 911. That style of wrench makes it a lot easier to replace them.

As far as the wrench in the OP, I would say it gives a little bit more torque for the user if the nut is slightly off center. Not much, but a little more lever action.
