ANd off to the weeds we go... ^
Shaun, some years have more damaging flu strains than other years. See 1918 for example.

The current situation has no vaccine. We still have 6 months to go for a complete year. And the Covid numbers are lower due to mitigation that have been put into place that were not in place with that peak flu season. |

Two years ago, seems pretty relevant to the conversation at hand. 80,000 people dead and nobody blinked.

Nobody blinked because 80,000 is less than half 190,000. Doing the math, 190,000 / 80,000 is 2.4.
Let's put that into 911 terms. 10 years ago a 1981 SC was $15,000. Nobody thought that was anything. Today, an SC is $36,000 or 2.4 times the price 10 years. Everyone thinks that's a big deal. And you have blinked at that price. See? And honestly, the flu was known with a history or fluctuating death rate. So you can see why no one cared. This is pretty basic logic.

Feel free to smear me all you want, but it does tend to dilute your argument when you stoop to insults. I have a number of medical professionals in my family and have received that from multiple sources. Because what you’re not considering is that many hospital patients don’t pay a dime because they are homeless or poor. So now the hospitals have the path to recognize some revenue, if only they test positive or have the symptoms of CV. I know how you love big businesses Shawn, so let’s not forget that hospitals are big businesses with a P&L.

So, if you question the number of covid deaths you really should be concerned about the far less accurate flu death total. Last edited by Sooner or later; 09-09-2020 at 06:28 AM.. |

Really?! Anybody who tested positive for CV was counted. Car accidents, violent crime, heart attack, if you test positive for CV you were counted. You don’t think that was/is disingenuous?

I do believe the current case panic is over the top. Of course those numbers were going to go up. We are testing more with more sensitive tests with some state economies opened up. Even with that, the number of US cases has declined over the last 5 weeks (flat this week from prior week). US daily deaths have been on a steady downward trend for the same 5 straight weeks. Hospitals have plenty of capacity. My stance is the middle of the road between you and Shaun. It is far more serious than them flu but not so serious at the current time that the economy needs to be further decimated. Overall, key metrics are positive at the current time. |

Covid != flu. Despite lockdowns and draconian measures, Covid seems to have 5 to 10 higher death rate than flu. That's rather serious.
To get back to Sweden, we are doing quite fine right now. Denmark and Norway have currently larger number of cases. Time will tell.

The counting methods have not been consistent.
In the US hospitals have been incentivized to count anything that appears to be Covid as Covid. (note how much more Covid count the US had/has than the ROW) Otherwise healthy people rarely died from the Wuhan Virus. Apparently some people's systems would over react in trying to rid the body of the virus.
