Removing Rubber Trim

My son is trying to remove the decorative door rubber trim from a 87 RX7. He got it off and the rubber is good. Now he is trying to get the tape adhesive strips and the goops of rubber glue someone used at some point to reinstall. Any suggestions on getting this stuff off?

To put back on, do people just use two sided tape?

Thanks in advance.

Scrape off the worst of it, then use the solvent based Goof Off or a similar remover type product for the residue. Heat sometimes helps soften things up. If these are weather strips they have special glue for that, I think made by 3M. Just mask any surrounding painted surfaces and use a lot of clamps to keep everything in place.

Goof Off is what I use. Wear rubber gloves!

I use 3M adhesive remover. If it's a hard, dried glue, I'll sometimes soften it up with a citrus-based paint remover like Citristrip. Note that I'm careful to not get any stripper on the paint, just the glue.

As for what to put it back with, it depends on the trim. In some cases a two-sided tape is OK, other times an adhesive is good.... hard to say without knowing more about the shape of that particular trim piece. 3M makes a bunch of both.

I bought an eraser wheel years ago at a NAPA store and they work well . Old pinstriping glue residue came right off . It works by friction/heat of it spinning on the surface .
