online voting

In this day of covid distancing, why are we still stuck with the same old voting booths?
No reason (that I can see) why we don't move on to on-line voting.
If a person (like myself) can go online and sign-up for a $2K SS payment for every month the rest of my life.....maybe it's time to consider voting online can be secure. The voting rate would automatically double.

Any arguments for or against?
I don't think this would be a political question...it involves all the same.

One of the issues is access to the internet. It’s a problem for students that stay home and are expected to take online classes. That’s my take anyway.

The only thing out there that’s less secure than the mail.

I

I would have no problem with it...if it was verified through the same checks that a bank would make. Way more chance of error the way it is.

I've been thinking a lot about this lately. I think it would take everyone registering to vote again with the federal government providing a federal voter ID number that is only used for voting. We can't use our Social Security numbers as identifiers for online voting because the system it too compromised. Most without internet access could vote by going to a library or go old school and vote in person. Then there's the whole hacking problem to be addressed but we should have the people available to secure the system. If not that's a pretty damning statement about where we stand as a nation.

Those who say the internet is not secure enough....are the same who trust the internet for their banking transactions.
The same safeguards could be easily implemented for voting.

And which low-bid contractor would you trust to handle that? The same ones that gave us such wonderful security as used by yahoo! Citibank, etc.?

The thing is, I know if I got scammed online banking. Either I did not get my monies, or the other party did not get funds I sent .
No way of really knowing or trusting that the vote I cast was counted, or hundreds of thousands of votes from others were legit.
Do you really truly believe that this could not be corrupted ?

You gonna get into 2 factor authentication for voting? I'm all for it! Before fully logged in you have to enter not only your unique identifier but a code that is sent by email or text that is only good for 10 minutes.

sounds good to me. I detest the voting booths in my area. Wait a half hour in a hot smelly wood shack. I will never go there again.

I've been voting by absentee ballot (mail-in) for a lot of years. Works just fine for me.
As long as the post office doesn't get de-funded and snail mail really gets slower than it already is, it'll work just fine.
I don't think enough voters have access to the internet that internet voting would be a good thing.
And yes, I get my SS payment just like you do via the internet.

Why we haven't moved on to it....I don't know.
