What do you do with your spoon
When traveling through states that do not recognize your carry permit?
I have always unloaded, and kept it in its case in my truck tool box, outside of the cab, box locked . A car is easy, just lock it in the trunk in its case. How about in an SUV? We are plowing our Yukon Denali to the outer banks tomorrow nite . We have to pass through Maryland, which basically recognizes no carry permits from any state , just like DC. Although we are really only in the state for 20 minutes, I still like to play by the rules . My gf got caught with some pot probably back in 90/91 ( after a Dead Show ) in Frederick Maryland , and I went with her to her court date She got a $250.00 fine, but I remember sitting through another guys hearing who was a Pa resident, and carrying concealed in his car in Maryland. They threw the book at him, I never want to be that guy. I'll have a car top carrier on , and Ill probably just stash it up there for the 20 minutes Im in the state , or I thought about stashing it in the storage compartment in the rear . I have a nice locking case for it . and I always keep the ammo somewhere away from the case How do you like to do it ?

Usually in the back storage sleeve behind the passenger seat (out of sight, and not with me if the police ask).

Maryland
Guns must be unloaded, cased and stored in an inaccessible area. Maryland does not recognize any other states’ permits.

You keep moving it around it will be on your conscience. You'll get nervous.
Leave it where you're comfortable and just drive. Don't speed (too much) and don't drink. You'll be fine.

If it's a semi auto you could take the top half off and store that separately.

This as well. I’d keep it in my center console, loaded and never think twice about it. In fact, I’m pretty sure that is what I did when I drove through MD. on a road trip once, not even realizing their laws.

Don't possess a gun in an illegal fashion.
Period.

If only we had an over-reaching top legal document that said no other laws could infringe on gun possession.

Best thing is to research MD law. But can't imagine they are more strict than NJ which says the weapon must be kept unloaded in a locked compartment (other than the glove compartment) ammunition including magazine which may be loaded are to be stored in a separate locked case.

I would throw the ammo and mags in the overhead case. Put the spoon in it's case locked and in the way back or under the seat, I would want that in the vehicle. You are also going to want to know what "travel" means. In NJ you are not permitted to stop anywhere unnecessary. No stopping at a diner, tourist attraction, etc. You can take the spoon from your house, to the car, to the range and back. No stopping to get your oil changed or the car wash. If you are travelling through NJ, get in and get out, stop for gas only. MD being a communist state like NJ I would think is very similar.

A few years back we had a fellow in NJ nearly serve 7 years prison time for having spoons in his vehicle. All legal and properly stored. It made nationwide news.
Here's his story. https://www.google.com/url?sa=t&rct=j&q=&esrc=s&source=web&cd=&cad=rja&uact=8&ved=2ahUKEwjflJqu6eDrAhWcl3IEHcP0BC4QFjADegQIBhAB&url=https%3A%2F%2Fabcnews.go.com%2FUS%2Fjersey-man-imprisoned-gun-charge-appeals-governor-clemency%2Fstory%3Fid%3D12287484&usg=AOvVaw3J5Q-DBh_9vrsCMo85ZBBl |

Stash yer unloaded spoon away from ammo and locked.
Don't wear a tie-dye, remove that Bob Marley sticker off the rear bumper and don't reek.... I always have a loaded spoon locked in my truck tool box these days. For decades a .45 was kept in the glove box when traveling alone... I probrably broke a few rules along the way.... Hope you have another awesome trip to the banks Fred ![]() |

I think you got the best advice already. If you are carrying, before entering a state that does not recognize your right to carry pull over place the spoon UNLOADED in a locked box then put the ammo and magazine in a separate locked box in another location like the trunk. NEVER take the chance of carrying in a state that does not recognize your right to carry. God forbid something unforeseen happens be it an accident or medical emergency and they find your weapon. That opens you up to all kinds of issues that were totally avoidable. Most of these states are just itching to make an example out of lawful gun owners.

If driving from Western Pennsylvania to OBX, it would be extremely inconvenient to avoid Maryland.
I would just store it in a locked case in the hatch area and not worry about it: more secure than roof storage and not accessible from the drivers seat.
