What a cool group of people, this is what the car community is supposed to be about!
Just start thinking about it and work on that urge to build a fire breather until it's on solid mechanical ground.

That's the crux of the matter Bob. I don't think our friend Ger will be satisfied with a solid factory 3.0L motor unless he has a 2200 lb car with 15" Fuchs. This is why I have been recommending a 3.2. You get so much more motor, well 15% more anyway, easy to chip and exhaust for more hp and you get modern fuel injection.

Yep. The net cost of a 3.2, with selling the 3.0 would be palatable.

I think Plan A is, fix head studs and make sure the 3L is solid.

Then source a 3.2L and see where the budget is after selling my 3L.... rough guess says MAYBE sub $5K

The 3.2, with headers, intake and a SW chip should be in the 250-260ish CHP range. WIth new bumpers and seats I think I can get my car at or just under 2300lbs (its 2450 now).

Read up on how to do a compression test. Broken studs will not impact those numbers.

If you have a running 3.0 with, I think, carbs, I am sure you can get north of $8K for very easily, probably a lot more. There are tons of 69-77 people who would love a carb'd 3.0 in their car. Or someone with an SC that just needs a solid motor and not a ton of hp.

I "feel" like its a solid motor, no smoke and runs and pulls well. I am sure it would be a great fit for an early car as a quick all in one upgrade.

Have you driven the car in a 'decent' state?

If it were me I would get it running and drive it a little bit to make sure it's even close to something I would want.

Hehehehe, Michigan does lack roads that allow you to really appreciate canyon/mountain cars. Most of South East Michigan is a flat grid pattern.

That said I love driving my Mini JCW, it's 15 years old but has enough power to be rewarding in a straight lil blast, and turns great, not to mention it has a transmission from this century.

Depending on your comp and LD numbers, I would start at $12K for the motor. If you want to send me your fan and housing, I'll Cerakote them for you, no charge.

While I enjoyed the mid year I drove with a 3.2, I never felt my SC with SSIs was lacking. It’s not going to win any drag races, but most air cooled 911s won’t.

It might be the case, that fixing the head studs and just driving it would be enough... Maybe I keep the Porsche simple and find a big power toy for "those" days.

Shaun,

I have heard many people talk about how much nicer the 3L rev's compared to the 3.2, what's your take?

I do love how freely that lil engine likes to rev. it spins easier than any car i've ever had.

A stock 3.2 isn't rev happy. One with a test pipe and sport muffler and Steve Wong or Sal Carsellar chip revs as quickly or quicker than a 3.0. And with those things you are looking at 240ish hp.

I helped Ben McFarland prototype the first M&K muffler for Carrera's years ago. That muffler was special, long can design, it allowed the motor up instantly. It was shocking. Will be posting on muffler design on Technical soon to get some input on that. I am sure Brian at RarelyL8 will chime in.

Ben made this custom muffler for me which is essentially straight pipes masquerading as a muffler. Headers go straight through. It's awesome but has an aaaaahhhh on decel that I want to eliminate. Might have it redesigned with 3" pipes too.

OMG listen to those cams chop.... I so think the 3.2 swap is about the best path I can go if I stick with the Porsche.

Also thanks for reinforcing my belief that a 911 without a wide body is pointless!!!

For shame! Not at all. There's a purity to narrow body longhoods that is unmistakably elegant and transfixing. They all get friendly waves and thumbs up and what year is that, I thought so's...

While a stock 3.2 is more refined than your 3.0, you can certainly make the 3.0 with carbs, perform as well (or better) than a stock 3.2. My 3.0 (SC engine) middie has cis and will eat a late-80s stock Carrera alive (and all stock widebodies of the era that are not turbo)...at least up to around 80-100 mpg...and it looks like a girls car. Of course, it has the 7:31, lighter weight, and 15 inch wheels mentioned earlier by someone. It is also much more fun than a Carrera as you rev and shift a lot more on the street vice tooling around in second or third. Think hard before swapping engines vice fixing the one you have.

Yea I get that Flint, I love the character of my 3L, but at about $400 per HP another 50HP is a big big bill.

If money grew on trees I'd have a 3.2SS, ported heads and some nasty cams. But that's a $30K engine, I have a very hard time knowing what I want to do with this car.

A 3.2 swap I'd be in for $5K but still have a used engine that "could" cost me big at some point. A freshing of my 3L would get me close to stock 3.2 power, at 4-5X the cost but have a mostly fresh engine.

Or I could fix my head studs sell the SC, and get an Elise and never worry about expensive engines.

But I do take great joy in see my lil SC in my garage.

You don't need a 3.2SS to get stock 3.2 power. A well done 3.0 build with carbs, cams and exhaust will do that without a huge amount of mods...and cost a lot less than you think (unless I am more out of touch than I realized). Your Jugs, pistons, etc. are likely fine. With a 3.0 and better gearing, it would drive/feel faster than a 3.2 Carrera. Even so, It will not be a stoplight racer...and lots of cars would be much faster. If you just want acceleration, an old $10K Cayenne TT V8 will almost outrun any 911 on this board (mine included).

I like a sleeper. Even though my '89 3.2 (stock except chipped) looks relatively fast, my girly '74 3.0 accelerates faster by far....and handles much better. It feels like a go cart compared to the heavier and airplane-geared Carrera. The only clue is the wider wheels/tires, sport seats, and chubby '74 Carrera steering wheel...which only an aficionado would notice. Unlike most, I prefer a targa...and they never have the top on

My 3.0 was built by Supertec and looks pretty mild...but is paired perfectly with the right wheels/tranny for the street. I was willing to give up the additional 15-20 I might have gotten from carbs to keep it stock look/feel/reliability of CIS. The bottom half is a later (early 80s) engine for higher compression and the top, a '78 with bigger intakes. Webcams and SSIs.
