My college buddy's '73 Mercury Capri (great cars btw) needed a qt. of oil with every other gas fill-up, had a Coleman cooler as a front passenger seat, and the driver's windshield wiper didn't work one beach trip... a clutch no one could drive without lotsa seat time... or beer....
"The CaprieceOfSchit"  Another had the 6-cyl version ... wish I had one now

Toss up for me since I've owned a Vega and Nova in my teen years. As an adult here is a list of the crap I've owned:
Dodge Omni that was given to me in 1988 Mercury Sable Jeep Cherokee 1991ish Lincoln Navigator late 90s BMW X5 early gen But probably the worst was the early 2000s Volvo XC90 T6. That POS ate tires, turbos, but worst of all was it ate transmissions. You couldn't drive from A to B due to the lowish MPG and small fuel tank. We expected a lot more and were totally disappointed.

1981 Jeep CJ 5 with the Pontiac "Iron Duke" 4 cylinder engine. I owned it for about 70,000 miles. AMC used a mix of parts on this thing. 6 sets of brake pads (Ford brakes) I rebuilt the calipers twice and put on a set of rebuilt calipers, the brakes just drug all the time. The engine had metric fasteners and the rest of the vehicle was standard. at about 50,000 miles the motor was using oil bad. I was a Private in the Army and drove 13 miles to base. I would go to the motor pool and get a quart of oil every day, it was using a quart of oil every 26 miles. I did this for about a month before I could afford to rebuild the motor. I got rid of the Jeep at 99,000 and the motor needed rebuilt again. This was the vehicle that swore me off American made cars until I bought a Dodge Ram diesel pickup 20 some years later.

I think I posted in one of these repeating threads about worst cars that mine was a 2000 Grand Cherokee. Other than post 123 I think it has come up here and on other threads many times.
That one deserves an award. |

Just an amusing story about a POS car...
My friend Neville had a Skoda back in the 1970s. It was always breaking down. One day he was just happily driving down the highway when the gearbox/diff locked up. It went into a skid and Neville went off the road, down a bank and nearly into a river. Neville climbed back up and hitch hiked home. A few days later a tow truck drive phoned Neville and offered him $50 for the car. I was slagging off the Skoda and Neville said "Don't criticise it, it's the only car I've ever made a proifit on." |

I actually had a good experience with a 1999 Jeep Cherokee with inline 6. It was a basic SUV...basic in design and engineering. Parts were cheap. It never let me down. I guess I got lucky.

Our absolute worst was a 2013 Nissan Rogue. The CVT would overheat in the mountains of Kansas. Would stop running entirely if it got in the upper 90s.
Current bad is a 2008 F150 we inherited and use for towing. 68k miles and has been in the shop more than we have towed with it.

A friend bought a Vega in the day and from the get go had a rattle. Dealership searched high and low for the culprit. Finally they pulled the passenger side door card to find a coke bottle from the Lordsburg assemblers with a note, and I’m quoting, “how long did it take you f*^ckers to find this”. Build date was a Wednesday mid day. And that was the least of his problems with that car.

Back in the 1970s when Pintos were new and common, a friend bought one new. He hated it soon after purchase, but it was cheap on gas and worked as a commuter. The resell value was almost scrap metal rate. His goal was to hit 100,000 miles before he scrapped it. At 99,950 miles he was rear ended by a dump truck. Amazingly the gas tank was OK. He drove it another 50 miles just to hit 100K, and drove it to the scrap yard. He got a nice insurance check and he was happy to be rid of it.
