I understand the proximity to LAX would be a concern, however is there anything technically illegal doing this? Meaning if he were to do it in the middle of nowhere would the FBI also be investigating it?

It is indeed totally legal for a small aircraft to take off, and fly around in the middle of nowhere and never use the radio or ask any permission of anyone. We could in fact take off from the airport where we keep our airplane and fly off north west and never use the radio. If we flew towards the Oklahoma City metro area, we better have the radio on and talking to the tower.
LAX is not the middle of nowhere, and the area is indeed very restricted for any aircraft. They better be talking to the control tower and have the proper ADS-B radios and transponders and follow the instructions of the tower. A jet pack in the area of LAX is bad pookie.

I think it was a UPS/FedEx flight map or something but flying short-hop cargo across Las Angeles is done daily.
Traffic was so bad in LA..or volume is so great.. or maybe it's just bulk overflow and empty airplanes needing cargo with discount rates available perhaps.. Instead of sending out trailers across town: It appeared to be actually cheaper to load air freight at a local sort hub, drive it to the LAX airport, load it on a plane, fly it 10 miles to the next airport, drive it to a sort hub on a trailer, unload sort and distribute it to package cars, and have them deliver it to individual addresses.

The article says the jetpack guy was about seven miles northwest of LAX. That would put him solidly in the Class B (controlled) airspace. Possibly somewhere near the coastline.
What amazes me is that he was at 6000ft. He would have to be wearing a parachute as well in case of jetpack failure. Or, he's incredibly ballsy/stupid.

A manufacture of jet packs is located on the north side of Los Angeles.
Their Pack is rated to 15,000 feet but only has 10 minutes of fuel. Maybe it was one their customers? |

Several reports of jetpack guys flying parallel with aircraft on final into LAX. That’s pretty dangerous.

Come on guys. Admit you'd love to do this!
You could wave at someone in an airplane and then when they go to tell someone you are gone!

I am still awaiting the day I can get my jet pack. It would be great to just jet down to the convince store and grab a 6 pack, or fly over to the restaurant and get an order to go.
I will stay away from airports, and just a few hundred feet is plenty high for me.

Wayne's too responsible to be jetting up like that, but if he walks into the garage one afternoon and finds the jetpack warm to the touch and the kids nowhere to be found, he might want to ask some pointed questions.

This guy gets honorable mention for doing it without a jet.
And yes, I'm up for doing both (although I'm not going to be buzzing the ground like Jeb Corliss).
