Engine Destruction

I can't believe the amount of destruction when one of these M97 engines lets go.

Wow!

At 6000 rpm, engines turn 100 revolutions per second. Let that sink in. When they let go, carnage ensues. Doug Zielke collected, as a hobby, photos of such Mechanical Mayhem. I would like to see those pics.

Yes, pretty much any engine that comes apart at redline , there will be mass carnage .
I once dropped a 10 mm nut down the cylinder of a 5.4 triton, and in less than 1 minute run time, I punched a hole in the block, destroyed the head, valves, piston, rod, and crank .
That one stung .

How about sooooo much boost it blows the entire block up off of the rotating assy?

If it makes you feel any better, YOU didn't punch a hole in the block or destroy the head/valves/piston/rod/crank. The 10 mm nut did.

Very similar to any engine that either looses a rod bearing, or stretches a connecting rod bolt. I have a 997S engine in the shop that suffered a similar failure, but it does not look any different from a 2.0T VW motor that got over revved and lost two rods, punching large holes in the block and melting a couple of pistons..... Found part of a piston and wrist pin on the under tray. "OK"

It is not unique at all to a Porsche M96/97 engine... But does create great drama....

The manufacturers test and then declare a REDLINE that is not to be exceeded. If one missed a shift and goes from 4th to 1st AKA the money shift it is the driver's fault, not the engine designers and makers.

It's almost as if destruction is inevitable especially if you track your car...

There was a young fellow a few years ago in San Diego that had a 4L twin turbo engine put in his Turbo by Black Forest and it went to beat all! BUT it wasn't fast enough for him so his buddy and him decided to play with the electronic boost control and got it set to go up to 8 BAR which he tried on the newly opened state route 52. It blew the engine so badly the block had thousands of cracks in it and actually stretched the head bolts so much there was a large gap between the bottom of the cylinder barrels and the block and the crank was flopping around as there was massive clearance in the main journals! He went back to stock after that.
