In people's simple minds, what's the worst thing it can happen? So they just asked.

The biggest laughable offer I had was on a house (this was a time when we were renovating and selling them). Some random Middle Eastern guy, always along with another man or two came on to property while the workmen and I were having a chit chat about finishing up the house. This is deep into the residential area. They must cruise around looking? He's half way into the yard and starting asking to see the owner. The guys tried to get them to stay out but they kept coming. I confronted them asking they must leave. He opens his mouth saying he wants to buy the home from me. Typical siht, "I give cash now. I go bank now." I say no, not for sale, you must go. They are aggressive, kept asking how much. I say, 1.2 mil. He laughs and say no way, "I give 500,000. You take money, go long vacation with wife. I finish house. No more head ache for you" The exterior painting was just finished, the wrap around deck was just started. Yard work was next. Yeah, a 900k house for 500 so I can walk away. What the hell are they thinking? The guys tell me he's been around the past few days looking and got in once but was thrown out.

I often wonder why they do this? Have any of them ever been successful at any of their offers? They must hit the jack pot at one time, or else they wouldn't be doing this wasting time instead of working a regular job?

I don"t have to sell parts. I sure as hell don't do this for a living thankfully, and if I have something someone wants, I'll be happy to do so IF I recognize your username, or have dealt with you in the past or you've been around for more than 5 posts. I'm HAPPY to impart any knowledge I've gained through the years from here or the EarlyS, where I mainly hang out. Like I said, I'm old. Rant over......

It’s a simple rational explanation.....people suck. It goes both ways, last week I was trying to buy a set of lightly used Pilot winter tires for my wife’s E63, full set lightly used for $500 which is a fair price. I asked the seller for his best price including shipping to my zip. He responded that the tires were about 25 each. In multiple messages back and forth I attempted to explain to him that I would need for him to provide me with a price including shipping if I were to pay him for the tires plus shipping. Finally he writes that now he doesn’t want to ship them, after wasting plenty of my time. I suggested that he needs to update his listing to indicate “no shipping”, to which he got indignant with me. The best part is that he updated his ad to show no shipping, but that he’ll meet within an hour of his house? Wtf? Guy is willing to drive two hours round trip but he won’t drop them off at a UPS Store. People suck....

I consider myself lucky. I've gained the ability to tell the tire kicker from the serious buyer over the years. Had one guy stand in my driveway, tell me he'd take a $35,000 machine. On the drive home his wife asks "did you try to negotiate?" he says "no" she gets mad. He calls me and asks if I'll take less. I tell him no, but I'll now take $37,000 for the machine. He says "you can't do that!". I say "Sure I can.. I own the machine!"

I was looking for a Range Rover recently, a P38 around 2000 year model. Found one locally on Car Gurus and saw that it had been listed for well over 300 days. Made contact with the guy and he said he wouldn't be able to sell for 30 more days. Not on vacation, not fixing anything, just in no hurry to sell.

I was in a time crunch and luckily a better one popped up on Craigslist and I got it.

But I did respond to Car Gurus survey and complained about the listing for a car that appeared to not truly be for sale.

For every azzhold buyer, there's just as many azzhold sellers. I hate selling siht so it just sits and gets thrown away eventually. I also dislike buying use stuff over the net like craigslist and what not. They are good at not calling back or a simple return email. Do they really want to sell it or jsut put an ad up to get attention because they have no real friends and are waiting for a reply on their phone? Those guys really piss me off. I was ready to buy a radio for my 993. Email, text and continue to do so every so often when I see his ad. Nothing so fook it. Done with those dipsticks.

I have never, and will never ship an item before I have been paid for it in full. I have parted out about 20 different Datsun Z cars when they could be bought for $500 with rusted frames., so imagine the volume of individual parts that have traveled all over this country.

I have been selling garden tractor parts with the same philosophy.

My take with net transactions is that, much like net forums, people type things that they would never say in a face to face situation. Hence, some of the incredibly low "offers". Keypad makes everybody tough as been noted here ad nauseum over the years. I think that many buyers think that they are dealing with someone in a desperate situation and can use that to their advantage which, to me, says a great deal about their character and values.

Spent close to 40 years in aero procurement. Worked with people that would negotiate everything they bought with the idea that if you don't ask, you'll never know. For some people and cultures, it is just ingrained. Almost to a person, they could never get help when we had program acceleration and needed components sooner. They never understood why I was so successful in pulling in product and still managed decent pricing and savings to the company. Came down to understanding when to negotiate and when the price was already fair. One of my MRO buyers spent an entire morning going back and forth with 4 or five suppliers to save what amounted to $40.00 on cases of toilet paper while I was paying him $70 grand a year.

Just bought a new Forester from the same guy I bought the last one from. Last car was more than fairly priced and I paid asking price. New Forester - I banged a number on a sticky note and said that it was my ceiling. Done! They won and I won. Bonus is not wasting hours and generating animosity to save $100.00.

I just take a deep breath, and then psyche myself up before I finalize the listing, because you know the **** show is coming .
I have just sat on my last 3 flip cars, and waited for someone I knew to come to me looking for a ride.
Within 10 minutes of listing something of FB classifieds , they idiocy starts to pour in , faster than you can possibly reply to it all.
I do a standard copy and paste reply to all the madness, and then try to weed out the serious buyers, who are ready to show up with money .

I suspect it makes them feel good to throw round big numbers like $500,000.

Sadly it seems common decency is no longer common! I have used eBay to sell a lot of parts over the years and it now seems about 30% simply won't pay or even respond to you. Craigslist I expect tire kickers and jokers. I have typically found folks on enthusiast forums are trustworthy and understand that newbee's present a higher risk, but everyone has to start somewhere.

PS. I am a 50 year old newbee on this forum as I just purchased a '86 Carrera

I have a three car garage, and I was moving my 911 over to the work bay. So I pull it out and park in in in the parking area of my driveway, mover the El Camino over to the bay where the 911 was. As I was ready to get into my 911 some guy in a HUGE F450 pickup parked in in the street and said he wanted to buy my car. I gave him my standard reply when someone offers to buy either vehicle, it is not for sale for any reasonable price.

Of course he asked what I will take for it. I told him my price was 50K and regretted not saying 60K. Of course he wanted to call his brother and get the money together. He handed me a car, and he sure knew my address.

I keep my garage doors locked, and the cars locked in the garage.

Considering your history with that vehicle and the market, $50k doesn't sound that unreasonable. Even if you could buy another SC or 3.2L Carrera for that money, it wouldn't be that car that you've driven all over the place, multiple tracks, etc.... If it was my car, I'd put a price on the history/provenance that you have with the vehicle. I'd tell folks something closer to $100k. If you're not selling, and you're trying to give them a price that they'll balk at, you may as well give them a good one. And if anyone ever actually shows up with $100k, then....
