#### you.

Of course smart people swear more. Their level of frustration is higher. Honestly, I am sometimes amazed at the extreme patience of certain smart people I know. One says she is exhausted at the end of the day. I watch her eyes in meetings. She is always waiting for people to catch up. Waiting patiently and smiling warmly. She is both smarter than I am, and also considerably more patient. I suppose she has been practicing all her life.

As far as cursing and I.Q. I find that the most explicateds are spewed by groups where it takes 2 people to reach a total I.Q. of 100. The only caveat is that some people use foul language purposefully to intimate others. Smart but crude. The ones that use the f-bomb in every sentence are usually undisciplined and uneducated. If you disagree then God bless you.

All kidding aside, I agree w you. I use profanity too much and I consider it a character defect, something that I am continually trying to improve on. I nearly pimp-slapped a couple of young guys getting off a plane about a week ago who were cussing up a storm in front of innocent people and their small children.

My mom's dad never cussed at all. His worst epitaph of frustration was expressed as "dingbust". My dad's dad was a lot more fun to listen as his language was more um colorful.
My mom never used profanity in her life, no matter how angry. And she had a temper. I think it was a reflection of the house she grew up in, none of her brothers, (my uncles), ever cussed or swore that I heard. And they were some hockey playing, punch-throwing dudes...one was a Marine. Irish Catholics.

My dad swore like a sailor. I assume that was a reflection of the house he grew up in. It was also a part of his high strung personality. I use profanity way too much, though I'm getting better. One interesting thing to me is that I know people who use profanity but only when they are really angry, like ready to throw a punch. I use it in ordinary conversation, no anger at all.

I don't disagree and I think that people who do not watch their mouth around women and children, or really any members of the public who might not want to hear profanity, are exhibiting the height of rudeness. I've told strangers to watch their mouths in public many times, even though as I've admitted, I'm guilty of salty language myself. The context and the audience matters.

Swearing is not a sign of intelligence.

There may be statistically more intelligent people who swear than unintelligent people who don't (who cares either way), but there are more reasons not to swear than to swear.

If anyone thinks swearing is a badge of honor or rationalizes/justifies it after reading some semi-bogus study, well... they're fooling themselves.

And that's definitely not a sign of intelligence.

I was playing golf with some random guy that the starter put me with. He was a gray haired distinguished looking man whom I thought may be a doctor or a judge or something like that. He was friendly enough and cordial but after a couple of holes he missed a relatively short putt and commenced to spew out a long string of expletives. I don’t think this “distinguished” guy realized how stupid it made him appear. Seeing that taught me a lesson that day (probably 20 years ago) and I still remember it today!

I've never been much for swearing - not saying I totally don't when whacking/cutting my thumb/finger with something sharp/blunt. My wife & I almost never use swear words. Swearing is mostly a waste of time as far as I'm concerned much like smoking, which I gave up as a young guy. I decided that while working in construction in New York and later on in the Army. I've always associated it with people tending to be on the lower part of the spectrum of the social distribution. In thinking about the people who have been in my life who are higher quality, I can't think of one who is/was addicted to swearing. If you can't express yourself in an efficient, effective way with the language, then I guess you have to fill up the void by swearing.

I guess I'm just getting old, but I remember an Ann Landers quote that "profanity is a crutch for conversational cripples".

This reminds me of that time just before the Oval Blow-Job story broke when an article was published saying smart people have sex more often than dumbs hits.

Maybe The Finger has Tourette's?

That BS story was BS just as this BS story is.

Have you seen the captions for the Chinese bootleg version?

I won't be quoting.

The one that I heard as a child was, "profanity is the counterfeit currency of a bankrupt vocabulary."

Sometimes it is.

Sometimes it is not.

To claim that swearing is a sign of intelligence... what, because Flamingos can't swear?

Funny stuff guys!

It’s tough with kids, but on car trips I’ve had to catch myself with the F*word before it got out. But have we talked about the acceptance of the C*word in different countries?...

It's not just for injuries! Cursing works for any kind of frustration when I'm working on something. It upsets MrsWD if she's around, but it's just getting the job done to me. It's the only time I swear. I think that makes it more effective.
