So I built a mancave and now....

Hello folks!

So my cave is finished and I was able to start getting some of my toys brought in over the weekend. First in is my restored 1940 Model H John Deere tractor, looks great. But damn the next morning the smell of gas is awful! I shut the valves, wiped everything down and still bad smell! The tractor does not leak any fluids at all, but yet the smell is horrible. Next step I plan to drain the carb bowl and add a piece of plastic under the gas cap to prevent it from venting. The cave is about 500 sq ft.
Any ideas on what else I can do? And how do I get the smell out of my cave? Any products out there that work for this? Again the tractor does not leak, it has to be just fumes from venting or ??

Thanks !!

Where's your mancave? Can you open doors and vent the air? Is there HVAC? that can circulate that air?

I guess the obvious would be to move the tractor out. But that's obviously contrary to your plan.

My guess is that it's much warmer in the mancave than it is outside so has caused some evaporation.

I guess drain all of the gas, then let the thing vent outside.

I have opened the garage door and cranked the HVAC, but after closing it all up over night.....it comes right back.

I keep my Ducati in a small hallway just off of my kitchen. When I first brought it in I could smell fuel. Since it's aa closed system I knew there had to be a leak or some such. Took it back outside and checked everything. What I found was a spot underneath where oil and grime had accumulated. I cleaned it and replace the gasket on the fuel tank. No more odor.

Good luck.

Can you add a exhaust fan to keep the air moving?

Looks like you have enough room to add a bed once your wife throws you out of the house.

Mine always smells like gas and oil, I've learned to enjoy it.

Looks like a great space and I love the tractor!

You don't need a fan.

It released a fair amount of fuel from your description.

I would still look for a leak.

But, consider that you drove it in. And, maybe from cold outside. Could thermal expansion have driven some gas out somewhere?

The solution is to run it dry outside. Cool off. Push it in. Won't be anything to cause smell then.

Carburetor bowls are somewhat open to the air. And the crankcase vents to the outside.
No FI nor EVAP nor EGR nor Crankcase breather system there.

It's probably the fuel expanding and contracting out through the filler cap vent.

That's the trouble with fine art.

Did you take the gas cap off to release the pressure?
