Do you think a in fuel tank short, could cause an explosion, or fire ?
I ponder this every time I do an in tank fuel pump . Yesterday, I pulled one out of a 2009 cobalt, where there must have been high resistance right at the fuel pump connector on the pump submerged in fuel .
It got hot enough to melt the plastic connector, and turn the metal spades, purple . Even though it is submerged, I am sure that under certain conditions, fuel would slosh and expose this to oxygen . Is it possible ? I have never heard of it happening, and this is the only time I have ever seen anything like it . ![]()

Just because it is hot doesn’t mean it would create a spark. Just being hot won’t ignite anything.

So is it safe to do the work in immersed fuel?

If the pump is immersed then there's no O2 to combust with...right?
![]() So keep the pump submerged and no problem...maybe? I rode my R1100S 14 years with that setup right in front of my gentleman bits.

Not in that case, as said above oxygen has to be present + liquid doesn't ignite, the fumes do w/oxygen.

Uncounted millions of cars have the fuel pump inside the gas tank for a reason.

In the tank the mixture is too rich to burn.

The fuel tank operates above the upper explosive limit ... insufficient oxygen for combustion / explosion

All electric fuel pumps for gasoline are gasoline-cooled.
There is no O2 in liquid fuel. I'd guess there is very little O2 in the fuel tank at all.

Not inside the fuel tank, but when I was replacing the fuel pump under the car (lucky me - not) I got the perfect air to fuel ratio, and got a big orange flame/combustion.
It burnt the hair off one side of my head and left a sore on the side of my nose and above one eye. i had a fire extinguisher on hand so I saved the car then me in that order LOL I was trying to get the fuel pump working when it sprang into life with a spark on the terminal and shot fuel out that was ignited by the big orange flame. |

I've heard they weld NG pipelines with the gas on.

Fun fact: E85 in the winter might push the tank vapours under upper explosion limit.

I knew a man who was a welder for our local gas company and yes they do. If a leak opened up in a buried line he'd gear up, go down into the hole and weld it shut. Since it was absent O2 he could weld it. So he said.
