outdoor Mercury vapor lamp replacement, LED?

We've got a mercury lamp outside that's on a pole. It provides a ton of light for what would otherwise be a pitch black area.

I'd like to be able to more easily turn the lamp on/off, but the mercury vapor lamp doesn't do well at on/off. I've been thinking that some sort of LED flood that can come on and go off instantly at the flip of a switch and provide a flood of light would be nice.

Does anyone have anything that they would recommend to fulfill that function?

I don't think you can find anything that gives that much light for that little wattage.

These are what I use in my outdoor light. I think I had to wire something different in the fixture to get rid of a ballast or something like that. I then had to buy an adapter from the smaller base of the LED to the larger Mercury Halide. At some point I just changed the whole fixture out because I think the light sensor on it went bad.

Thanks, that's the kind of thing that I was thinking about. I figured there might be something out there.

They make one with the large end on it. The video I posted above uses a LED with the larger base. I went with the small base and an adapter figuring I might have to change out my old fixture before the bulb crapped out.

BTW, plenty bright. I didn't notice much if any drop off in how my driveway and parking area is lit.

Corn lights need a properly designed reflector. You my get lucky and have just the right one. Otherwise they cast light mostly sideways. I use one of those in a photo light box with a diffuser. Does a great job and doesn't get hot inside the enclosure.

The bottom line is no way will one of those put out the same light as a MV or MH fixture.

There are good LED options for your use, but you really need to replace the whole fixture and not just the bulb.

Most LED floods are not 360 degree like you probably have. I think you might look at four of these:

All you need to do is change the photo cell.

Having said that, the LED barn lights are really fantastic now. More light, less wattage, and damn reliable.

I had those and hated them. There was a noticeable cutoff in the light pattern. Plus the damn led drivers kept going bad.

local street lights were replaced sodium with LED ORANGE TO PURE WHITE

maybe a little dimmer but not a lot and looks better then the orange

there are screw size adapters you just have to gut the transformer and use 120 volt ac

Just go to Lowes or Home Depot and pick up an LED barn light.

My city changed to white LEDS. They are unidirectional, so if you are underneath the light, it is bright. However, there is not much light dispersion to the sides. This makes things seem much darker and more people are driving with their hi beams.

FWIW, my light originally came with a CFL. After the CFL died, I started installing LED's

This is the exact fixture I have on my barn.

That's not a problem. I don't really want/need 360º. I would be very happy with something more directional. Something like you've posted would probably work.

I'll notify you if I see a run on outdoor barn lights at Lowes or Menards in Ohio. I figure with the difference in time zones that should give you enough heads up.

Whatever you do, don't keep searching for them online because the prices will start changing due to perceived increased demand in your area!
