Covid Vaccines - if you take one, can you use a different type in a year?
It seems like there are 3 main types of Covid vaccine - MRNA, Carrier (vector) Vaccine, and Protien Adjuvant.
Each have their pluses and minuses and we sorta get a choice as to what type we get... sorta. As of today, anyone 40 or older can get AstraZeneca where I live. This would not have been my first choice however I do like the idea of the vector vaccine better than the other options. I personally know a guy in Norway who had a horrible reaction to AstraZeneca. If we get AstraZeneca, will we be able to get a Novovax shot in a year when it is available? What about one of the MRNA vaccines? Do the various vaccines play nice together? Does anyone know?

If you're getting one of the two part vaccines, you have to get the same for the 1st and 2nd.
Once you've completed a round, if you then are getting another in a year, I don't see any reason why you couldn't get whatever you want that's on the market at that time.

There is a study in the UK on mixing and matching the vaccines.
Here is some very high level infomation. They started the study last month, so it is very new. https://www.theguardian.com/society/2021/apr/14/uk-study-on-mixing-covid-vaccines-between-jabs-to-be-expanded

I am pretty sure that there are four (4) different types of Covid vaccines.
See, e.g., https://www.gavi.org/vaccineswork/there-are-four-types-covid-19-vaccines-heres-how-they-work#:~:text=The%20four%20main%20types%20of,RNA%20 and%20DNA) https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lFjIVIIcCvc There are plenty of other resources to learn about these types. Folks should realize that in the United States, it is likely that by law, any gubmint and/or private party (e.g., your doctor's) recommendations regarding mixing and matching must likely be based on studies. I do not know if such studies are underway in the US. If there are, they would have had to have been approved by FDA. So hopefully we will learn more... but remember it takes time for enrollment, than the study period, then all of the information has to be organized and pass company requirements, and then, if it makes sense go to FDA. Still not clear what will happen with the Astrazenica vaccine in the US. If I had to guess, I'd guess that it will get EUA. The Novavax efforts are chronicled in the public information on their web site. This includes protocols.

So far, I haven’t seen any data suggesting that “mixing” vaccines A and B gives a better result than the more effective of A or B alone. Other than logistical advantages. But more data will come.
The bigger issue is going to be virus variants i.e. mutations. Unfortunately, so many people in the US will refuse to be vaccinated, even after vaccine supply is ample, that there will be a large pool of unvaccinated people for the virus to circulate and evolve in And so many countries will not have access to vaccine this year and next year, that there will be an even larger global pool out there. So this virus will not be suppressed like we (humankind) were able to suppress polio, measles, etc. It isn’t so much a problem of vaccine efficacy, in my view. The current vaccines range from very to fairly effective against the main variants (and from very to extremely effective against severe disease caused by those variants), and if 80-90% of the population were vaccinated with the better vaccines we could probably suppress Covid regardless of its mutation - Israel is the test case here. The problem is that few countries will achieve more than 60-70% vaccination rate, and many will find that they have used the least effective vaccines - Chile is learning that now, with the Sinopharm vaccine. The good thing is that some of the vaccines can be relatively quickly modified to address new variants. That would seem to me like the main reason to get vaccine A now and vaccine B later. Ultimately my guess is that Covid vaccination will be a routine annual thing, like the flu vaccine is, and each year you might get a mix (non-technical term) formulated to address the main variants of concern that year. If you’re in the US or similar rich country, that is. The US and other rich countries really need to spend whatever it takes to get the rest of the world vaccinated ASAP. Letting the virus burn hot anywhere in the world is a threat to everywhere else.

FWIW My wife and I, and several friends got our first dose of AZ 4-6 weeks ago with minimal side effects....mild GI, joint pain. I'm planning on getting my second dose fairly soon...probably in 2-3 weeks. Your call but if you're now eligible....get it!

So we got booked to get our AZ shots on Friday, the pharmacist who is going to administer these is a close friend of my wife’s... she insisted that I get permission from my family doc after having got a blood clot after my surgery 3 months ago... my doc said ‘no go’ to AZ for me... I’m now getting Pfizer on Monday (doc’s preference over Moderna).
I’m nervous about the mRNA vaccines but enough of you guys have them... I’m hoping for no crazy long term effects.

For most people, Covid isn't a big deal. If you don't want the vaccine, don't get it.
Rika, I do expect the Covid vaccine to become a "yearly" deal, similar to flu shots. I do not know if you can mix them. Would be convinient. I do not agree that this is a big pharma conspiracy. Over reaction by the polititians? Yep. Over reaction by the media? Yep. Companies cashing in with a new situation? Yep. Don't they all?

Shingles vaccine cost me $178 for each shot. Insurance didn't cover it. I guess the cost of treating shingles isn't too high, so it's cheaper to risk having to pay for a sick insured person.
