I remember taking the bus with my Mom to the Sears in downtown Paterson to make the weekly payment on our appliances. Then we'd go to Woolworths and have hot dogs at the lunch counter.

My very first guitar amp was a Sears Silvertone.

rockfan4 09-29-2022 07:24 PM

I bought my stove, fridge and dishwasher at a Sears outlet near Minneapolis, scratch and dent, they all work perfectly fine for 11+ years now, except I had to replace a board in the fridge a couple years ago. Loaded them all up in the pickup and drove them home.

The store is now branded American Freight, and still sells scratch and dent appliances.

There's two appliance stores I can think of still in town, plus your Best Buy, Home Depot, Menards, etc.

I guess I didn't realize most of the Sears Hometown stores have closed too, there's only 5 left in Wisconsin.

When my wife and I bought our first house (1972ish), she bought a top of the line "Lady Kenmore" (or whatever it was called) washer and dryer from Sears. The guy came out and installed, left and my wife was all excited to do her first load of wash in the new machine...wouldn't go past fill mode. Called Sears back and they said a week to 10 days to get someone out to look at it. She complained and they finally sent some one. He checks it out and says needs a new timer. Gets on our phone and finds out it'd be a week to 10 days before a new timer was available. Wife says, well then, bring us a new machine. Guy gets back on phone and reports it will be a week to 10 days before a new machine can be had. Wife says load them both up and take them away, we don't want them. Then she went to a local appliance store and bought Whirlpool (who I think made Kenmore) that we had for probably 30 years.

faverymi 09-30-2022 04:58 PM

30 years.... Damn

They don't make them like they use to

I have my Grandfather's, (we called him Pawpaw), 1965 Silvertone electric guitar, amp, foot switch, and case. Sears sold guitars and amps under the "Silvertone" name and there were different manufacturers throughout the years. This particular guitar and amp were made by Danelectro. This one is the "Sunburst" color with the particularly rare "tortoiseshell" pick guard. All original and sounds fantastic, I love the tremolo feature. https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/202...811421b6df.jpghttps://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/202...a7cc85103f.jpghttps://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/202...be90b5b4d5.jpghttps://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/202...91dfbb84cb.jpghttps://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/202...c86e1fe336.jpghttps://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/202...8b07ff8a60.jpghttps://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/202...8792f6f5fc.jpghttps://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/202...eef639f55f.jpghttps://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/202...bc3fd78fd7.jpg

I had to make several repairs over the years...my wife called the washer "Lazarus" because I raised it from the dead!

Wow, Hyundai of Canada

The first dealer blows their PR bigly then it turns out that they are incompetent as well.

Sounds like a place to avoid if you find yourself driving a Hyundai.

Wow! WHat was the deal with the end of the article where it says that the repaired car started smoking on the way home from picking it up?

No follow up that I could find but yeah that was more than adding insult to injury. I'd be writing to the CEO, the Board and maybe a nosy reporter.

When I bought me first house in the early 1980s I said I wanted to buy it on November 1st, we shook hands on the deal. Two days before the closing, the water heater started leaking. So he had to pay for the new water heater. He called Sears to replace and install the new water heater and left the warranty pack on the kitchen counter.

On November 10th I woke up in for the first time in my own house. I went to take a shower and the dang hot water was not there. I check the water heater, and the burner was off. I managed to get it lit, and waited for the water to heat up, and got a shower and took a shower. The next morning, same issue. I called Sears, and they sent out a guy to replace the sensor (thermistor?) and it worked after that.

This one made me scratch my head. There is this guy who decides he's a woman so he transitions. Then they decide to get married. So they marry...a woman.

IDK if their spouse is a lesbian or not but WTF? I know that many of us like the same stuff that lesbians do but did he need to become a woman so that he could get a woman?

flatbutt 10-19-2022 04:49 AM

MacKenzie Scott married really well and divorced even better. Imagine being able to give away $billions and still have many more billions in hand.

flatbutt 10-20-2022 09:57 AM

Did you know...

For physicists, a jiffy is how long light takes to travel a distance of one femtometre, which is a millionth of a millionth of a millimetre. That means that there are about three hundred thousand billion billion jiffys in a second. A jiffy also has an electrical meaning. It is the length of a single cycle of alternating current. In the UK’s 50Hz system, a jiffy is thus one-fiftieth of a second.

Por_sha911 10-20-2022 06:29 PM

The length of "just a minute" depends on which side of the bathroom door you are on.

Steve Carlton 10-20-2022 09:31 PM

Be out in a jiffy.

Yeah, I never understand that sort of thing either. Or a man becomes a woman and then marries a man which I guess seems more normal, but couldn't he have just been gay? I'm not going to pretend to understand these things. I suspect some are biochemical, and I suspect some are psychological. I'm not judging or damning. Hopefully, they find peace/happiness.

No idea who MacKenzie is, but anything that involves "billions" is a problem that I'd be willing to try to tackle.

Interesting!

It's all about calculus!
You have position.
Then you have the rate of change of position which is velocity and also the first derivative of the position equation.
Acceleration is the derivative of the velocity equation or the second derivative of position. Acceleration is the rate of change of velocity. Possibly other than the calculus/derivative angle, I think most folks are probably good up to there.
But it keeps going!
The next derivative (3rd derivative of position), which gives us rate of change of acceleration is called "jerk".
That's interesting, but it gets even better!
The 4th, 5th, and 6th derivatives of position give us rates of change. The units for those are snap, crackle (or jounce), and, you guessed it, pop!
And, if you get that far, the 7th and 8th derivatives are sometimes called "lock" and "drop" which I may have heard at some point, but had forgotten. (I assume those are rarely called that, but then, my guess is that those are pretty rarely anywhere in the picture. But maybe I'm wrong about that.

What I definitely didn't know is that the integral of position is "absement" or absition. Which means that position is the rate of change of absement. "One meter-second corresponds to being absent from an origin or other reference point for a duration of one second." "absement" is the combination of "absent" and "displacement," and I assume absition is from absent and position.

I've always loved physics and calculus.

What do you get for $180 these days?

How big is the prime rib in the bottom of the bag? (But really, that is ludicrous.)

flatbutt 10-26-2022 01:26 PM

No meat at all.

masraum 10-26-2022 01:46 PM

Yep, I think our trips generally run $100 - $300. And the $100 trips don't result in much food.

oldE 10-27-2022 04:05 AM

In my twenties I struggled to carry twenty bucks worth of groceries to the car. These days I can easily carry over $100 worth.
I wonder how much stronger I'm going to get.

Best

Evans, Marv 10-27-2022 08:00 AM

I feel anxious when I compare the prices today with those long ago - bacon, $.49; bread, $.23; steak $.59; etc. It's not good to be old enough to remember those things, I guess.

rockfan4 10-27-2022 08:36 AM

I want a smart TV.

As in - I'm not yet 65. Don't show me the stupid medicare commercials.
Or more important - If I vote early - shut off the damn political commercials. Two weeks to go, I might not make it. My TV might not make it. One of the local stations is throwing in a 15 second shot of a bunny, just to give us a break.

flatbutt 10-27-2022 04:07 PM

If I liked Mikey Sherill (I Don't) I'd vote against her just because of how much she's spending on TV.

Bill Douglas 10-27-2022 11:14 PM

The great thing about expensive gas is it doesn't take nearly as long to put fifty bucks worth in the car.

Don't do a Flatty

Four months ago I bought an eGO 56v leaf blower. I've used it 4 times...4. Today it doesn't work. The battery is fine as it works in the pole saw. I call EGO to get warranty service. They have no record of my purchase and I no longer have the original receipt :o.

I go to Lowes and ask them to print a copy for me. They can't find a record of the purchase. I pull out the AmEx record for them but still no joy.

EGO won't honor the warranty without the original receipt and the AmEx record doesn't show what I bought. I have to find someone to fix this thing.

So, don't do a Flatty, keep those receipts.

Steve Carlton 10-31-2022 11:49 AM

Maybe call Lowes corporate office since you have the AMEX purchase date and dollar amount?

Steve, my man! I did that and it worked. It was a lengthy call but they found the original and I have a new leaf blower on the way. I did not think of calling corporate.

Thanks man.

Glad that worked out! I've been surprised a few times with the results of going up the ladder to address issues. Maybe the local store representative didn't have the ability to deal with it or didn't want to bother with it.

A few of you know that I really am a nerd who likes reading through PhD theses in areas of interest to me. I don't really understand much but some of it sinks in. I finally got around to Brian May's thesis. You can find it here:

https://core.ac.uk/download/pdf/295744.pdf

This dedication was particularly touching:

"My long neglected gratitude to my Dad, Harold May, who strongly supported my
scientific endeavours all through my life, until he passed away too young, and too soon
to see the full impact of his guidance and example to me. He also helped with some of
the diagrams seen here, and his influence, his immaculate attention to symbolic detail
and stylish draughtsmanship, can still be seen in some of the graphics in this thesis. I
hope I will at last do him justice. And to my dear Mum, Ruth, who encouraged me in
all aspects of my life, and gave me perhaps the deepest parts of my humanity."

Ridiculous tidbit for today

British singer Adele, who revealed she has rescheduled her Las Vegas residency since her canceled tour dates, had concert tickets being sold from $600 to more than $40,000 on StubHub.

svandamme 11-16-2022 08:34 AM

That is interesting

So you buy a ticket for 600
some schmuck buys it for 40 grand

Now what happens if Adele does a rock star OD and kicks the bucket
or is otherwise inconvenienced?

Right, they refund the ticket
Fair enough, right? Here is your 600 bucks

-39400 in the hole?
Hello mr Scalper, Can you refund me the remainder?
GOOD luck with that
Scalper : I sold you the ticket, you have it. its yours. K?thx!Bai.

a fool and his money...
