Anybody in Buffalo?

I know Buffalo is accustomed to snow but dang! Five feet?

GH85Carrera 11-18-2022 05:28 AM

One of my former co-workers grew up in Buffalo, NY. Back then I mentioned I had never had a white Christmas, and he looked like I said I was an extraterrestrial. Since then I have had two white Christmases and I hope to never ever again see one here again. If I want to see snow, I will go visit that crap up in the mountains were it belongs. And I want to see it at a distance!

flatbutt 11-18-2022 09:07 AM

I once visited Buffalo in the depth of winter. I swear that you couldn't see the houses from the streets which were like white canyons.

Steve Carlton 11-20-2022 09:21 AM

We had an extremely rare dusting of snow in the bay area while we were playing golf. Turned the course white for a little while. The cool part is when putting on the green, you could see a green line tracing the path of the ball, which was great when it was curving.

There was a Highway Patrol marathon on Decades last weekend. Brings up two questions:

1. All the police cars on the show were two door. Was that the way things were? Four door cars existed.

2. Broderick Crawford's hat. At least in the later shows, he wore the hat all the time. Wore it indoors, didn't take it off to talk to ladies. I know nobody cares now, but wasn't that etiquette in the late 50's / early 60's?

Red dots on google maps

Out of curiosity I looked up Qatar on google maps and saw that all of the peninsula is outlined with red dots like a fence.

Anyone know what that means?

My guess is that it is either a requirement for television image, or it could be a uniform requirement. I know that certain uniforms require headgear and some of those requirements also dictate things like when the headgear stays on and comes off.

It looks like the international boundaries marked out. If you zoom in, the marks dissappear.

that's just Google's way of showing you the borders of the country.
I did a search for Yemen and then Portugal and they were both the same.

Broderick Crawford was quite the drinker. If you watch the shows you'll see bumps and bruises on his head. There's one or two episodes where he's wearing tennis shoes because he messed up his ankle.

They said you had to get his scenes in before noon because after that he was done, blotto. You can see how fast he wanted to finish a scene by the pace of his dialog, that dude could talk a fast streak! The hat was probably left on to hide bandages or bumps in later episodes as his drinking (and off set injuries) progressed.

The cars were 2 door Buick Roadmasters. Sometimes you'll see trailer hitches on them since they used them to help tow trailers to location for filming.

Highway Patrol is one of the best sources of L.A historical location preservation on film. They were one of the first shows to film outside of a soundstage. They filmed a lot in Chavez Ravine, an early Latino neighborhood that was razed to build Dodger Stadium.

You'll also see some actors early in their careers who became stars. Clint Eastwood is in one where he's in a biker gang. There's also a few who moved over to Dragnet and Adam-12. Jack Webb based a lot of his production ideas on Highway Patrol

You'll see a bunch of actors in their early days on the Twilight Zone as well.

I just discovered "The Encounter," Season 5, Episode 31 played once in 1964 and was banned for 40 years due to it's racist portrayal of Japanese-Americans. Seems like the full episode might only be available on Paramount+ right now. It doesn't look like a great episode, but it would be interesting to watch. Stars Neville Brand and George Takei.

Silver Linings

The wife has been suffering from a bad bout of sciatica since August. Physio, massage, heat and pain killers had made things barely manageable.
Ten days ago our granddaughter brought a nasty flu bug home from school and was kind enough to give it to my wife. She spent almost four days in bed, hardly daring to eat, but the sciatica is gone!
Sometimes you just have to give in and let your body heal.

They’re building a new water front house on our street. They cut trees down, plowed everything up and put up the plastic erosion barrier the other day. Today they put up a split rail fence??? Looks like they’re trying to protect some of the remaining trees but I would think that would just get in the way of all the construction equipment. The picture is taken from a public path that goes from the street around the lot to a path that goes along the sound. Hopefully when they’re done, they will move the split rail out there to separate the path from their yard. Seems like that fence would be done at the end when they do the landscaping. Oh well, it’s not my money. (I couldn’t have even bought the lot!)

A930Rocket 12-21-2022 07:11 PM

The split rail fence is a form of tree protection. It’s required by certain jurisdictions and ARBs. Other times, other types of tree protection are used.

Correct Luna . . .

. . . but the USSR did not release the first photograph from the surface of the moon to the public.

You are correct, Luna 9 built and operated by the USSR is correct, but the first image was NOT first released to the general public by the Soviets.

The first photo from the surface of the moon was intercepted by the Jodrell Bank observatory in England. They published the photo the next day in a local paper called the Calgary Herald beating the Soviets to the punch.

I'm super impressed with this cool-headed mom. She takes her time to get a hold of the racoon by the scruff of the neck, holds it at arms length, gets her kid inside, and warns the neighbor to get inside before tossing it. Incredible!
