Am I Just a Cheap Bastard? I don't want to round up or donate my change!

Maybe I'm just a cranky old fart but I am sick & tired of going to a drive thru and the clerk asks me if I want to round up for a donation to some charity. I say NO or I will ask if I can round down. Then I get to the window and they ask me if I want to donate my change.

This is the normal routine at Panda Express and has now spread to other fast food places in the area.

And while I'm on my rant....This weekend at Home Depot the clerk asks if I will use my HD credit card and I say no. Then they ask if I want to open a HD credit card and save 10% on my $46 purchase. I asked the clerk what the interest rate was and they were stumped...I suggested they don't try an push a financial instrument without knowing what they are pushing.

I think I am getting old!

Welcome to the COB (crusty old bastids) club. I became a member decades ago.

Nope, not cheap. There is zero accounting or feedback on what that "donation" is really going to.

I always reply, I have several charities I support. That is all I can support, and I will decide when and how much to donate to them. It will not be to some likely bogus charity that is just some scam.

My number one charity is ME.
Sorry, I've been a member of COB for a while now. Just ask my wife.

I'm sure some people give more than a polite no!
Ya, I say no.

If the clerk is a hottie and a genuine (vs. identifying as) female I ask her for her number in exchange for my change.

So far, I haven’t donated and haven’t gotten any numbers, either.

But all seriousness aside, you can’t get snippy with the employee who probably hates to ask for money anyway. Well you can but then you’d be like Vern. Don’t be like Vern.

We were just discussing this yesterday.

You are giving them a tax write off.

+1

Just like round up to support the troops, teachers, hungry kids... yeah how much of that money actually goes there? I am going to say zero will go the people that need it.

Nice racket to break into though.

Same here, but I usually ask them if they would like to support my favorite charity.
So far no takers, go figure.

Back before they showed the world that the company is run by dooshes, we went into a subway sandwich shop.
When it was time to pay the bill it automatically defaulted to include a stupid-high tip that you had to manually decline.
My wife paid the whole thing.
I asked her why, she said it was embarrassing to say no right in front of the employee. I told her that if we ever go back, I will pay the bill and say no.

I'd be willing to bet the employee doesn't get that money anyway, or at least not all of it.

The person asking the question is not the one that has set policy. They are just doing their job, as required. Keep it simple and just say no if you don't want to contribute.

If they donate anything to charity it will be a deduction on their taxes. The question for me is IF they record the revenue they are collecting for said donations.

I think there will be some employees that pocket the change if they work it correctly.

I used a self checkout at Walmart the other day and saw that it asked me if wanted to "round up" to the next dollar. I was like, hell no, why would I want to do that, so they can fleece more change out of me??? Damn, already pay sales tax on everyfreakingthing!!! No, I am not "rounding up"!!!

Truthfully, I feel bad for the person asking. They're likely being told this is one of the conditions of their job by some petty megalomaniacal junior manager just waiting to write someone up for not asking if I want to round up or apply for the store credit card. Were I in their shoes, the last thing I'd want to do is open up another avenue for a customer to complain.

No, I don't donate anything. Even if they're hot.
