my upper body is sore from picking Pears.
my 92 year old neighbor has this crazy pear tree. she is from WWII era, so she is super frugal. she wants ALL the pears. there are thousands of them, and some of them are 25 feet in the air.
she has been calling me every two days for the last two weeks giving me "pear updates". yesterday, was P-day. i got the call. being 92, she has the patience of a 4 year old. i commute home, but on shorts + a big floppy hat. i borrowed a 20 foot long aluminum tube from a buddy and rig up that picking basket tool and get to work. wow. the bigger fruit are probably 1 pound each. i did a huge box full, and i was gassed. my arms and neck were done. i went home and popped open a beer and made a salmon dinner. this morning my body aches. haha.. i did some quick math. a full tool at a 45 deg angle at 20foot hypotenuse is about 14 lbs at the end. i just got the latest pear update. it ended with, "oh, i got the ladder out for you". FAACK. ![]() today is gonna suck. i took home 5 pears. there might be too much flavor in the pears. they are insane. i begged that she hire an arborist to trim the rogue tree down to a manageable size. the tree would be healthier in the long run. and i bet the next batch of fruit will be giant.

Cliff. If there were more people like you in the world, it would definitely be a much better place.

some of you all are gross.
i have a great relationship with the lady. honestly, i think she was a bit racist towards me in the beginning. i just ignored her and did what i do. be nice. i (potentially) saved her ass in a wildfire when i crawled thru her window at night to wake her up and get her packed. the entire time, i was thinking, "i hope she doesnt have a gun". (she has since given me a key to her home) i was chanting her name and my name.. we are friends. totally on opposite side politically, and she still drops the occasional inappropriate comment about some people. i move on. she effen 92, and wont change now. i'm 50's and still flexible enough to ignore c****. she calls me family now,.. dont make it gross.

My grandfather used a particular word. Apparently, when I was born, my mom told him (her father) to not use it when I was around. I didn't hear him use the word until I was in college. The thing that was odd and hard for me to get my head around was that when he used the word (not frequent), there seemed to be no malice associated with it. He had friends that would have matched that group of folks, and I don't believe that he was racist. He would have been prejudiced against people based on their actions, not their skin color.

That's a big pear! Are they really soft or firm and crunchy. It looks like the soft and juicy variety to me (which is my favorite). I've never lived anywhere that I got fruit fresh from the tree except when I was a kid, my grandfather had a yellow grapefruit tree. It was very sour and required sugar. And I lived near a place that had a pomello tree. I used to swipe a pomello from time to time, and they were very, very good.
When I was about 8, we moved to Japan. I remember being a kid and being AMAZED at the apples and carrots that we got in Japan. ![]() And they we pretty much always individually packaged in these mesh, foam sleeves like in the pic below (but I don't remember them being that glossy). ![]()
