from the EPA: Sulfuric acid is a highly corrosive chemical that is potentially explosive in concentrated form. It can cause severe skin burns, can irritate the nose and throat and cause difficulties breathing if inhaled, can burn the eyes and possibly cause blindness, and can burn holes in the stomach if swallowed. Hope you are ok.

What battery? Assuming a lead acid battery…
What smoke? Was the battery overcharging or burning? Assuming overcharging, there could be hydrogen, water, oxygen. If it was overcharged for very long time, there could be H2S, which can be deadly, but since you are typing, you are most likely fine. https://wwwn.cdc.gov/TSP/MMG/MMGDetails.aspx?mmgid=385&toxid=67

If you inhaled enough Battery Smoke to harm yourself you wouldn't be posting about it here.
Years ago I prepped a concrete floor with acid so I could lay ceramic tiles on top. I used "pool acid" neat... (Hydrochloric Acid) - Nasty stuff but it got the job done. The problem with acid is being trapped in a confined area. If you're out in the open you can get way from it. EDIT: Just saw the photos... Thank **** you're OK. If in doubt go and see your doctor. Take care Mr Byron.

Sorry about the car…Since the battery burned, I would be concerned about sulfuric acid fumes inhalation. But if that was the case, you would have felt irritation in your nose, throat, lungs very rapidly.

Still here

The car, ouch.
Unless you're standing there wafting in the fumes, hard to see how there would be serious injury. How's the face ? |

All those cigars and booze and you're worried about "battery smoke".
Take 2 shots of Pappy Van Winkle, smoke a Robusto and call me in the morning.

There is no nitric acid in lead acid batteries, chemistry genius.

Scary! Guess it wasn’t the recalled hose going to the fuel rail (as I said in the other post). Any idea why the battery fried? Glad you survived it!

The fuel line was only a few years old, everything under the hood was fresh, a SP1 buil engine. ![]() ![]() Based on the sound I heard right before, I think this is the reason. ![]() I was running back and forth grabbing stuff out of the car and have been having a lot more trouble breathing since
