Don't the new SD Fords have a 10 speed tans in them? I have a friend with a gas one he doesn't get terrible mileage in it for what it is.

The newer diesels don't get anywhere near the mileage that that older ones did with all the crap on them. The ULSD doesnt help either.

Over the decades I have had 6 pick up trucks. Two Ranger long bed 4x4s and the others were full size regular cab 2wd with 8' boxes. I liked them all for their utility and worked a couple of them hard. It was interesting how they got more refined as manufacturers added more sound deadening and features. I have done 600+ mile days in a couple of them and enjoyed the drives.
However there came a time when I didn't need something like that in my driveway. It has been 3 years since I sold the last truck. We added a trailer hitch to the wife's Golf Sportwagon and borrow the BIL'S 10' trailer when needed. I very seldom miss the $100 fill ups.
If I need to haul something larger, I'll rent.

I recently sold my Ram 2500 diesel and have been driving around a MK4 Jetta I picked up planning to fix and flip. It’s so nice to be able to pull into any space in any parking lot with having to think about it or stage a multi point turn to get out. Growing up in a rural area, you could go anywhere in a big pickup and not think about it, but even here in Phoenix it felt massive at times. I still want another pickup, but it won’t be a huge one. I’m really looking at the new Ford Ranger, or maybe even a maverick. Something with a bed, but that drives small and fits in my own driveway.

A few years ago I had a incident with a cup of coffee while driving my black '09 Ranger to work. A few broken ribs and stuff. Replaced it with a Black '18 Tacoma. A few weeks ago some one PIT maneuvered me on an off ramp. Rolled over once. Nobody was hurt this time but the wife said no more black trucks. Now I'm driving a white 328D Wagon. Just couldn't see putting out that kind of money a new truck when I'm about to retire.

Honda Accord great car my neighbor has been buying a new Accord every 3 years for the last 30 years.
10 Accords over 30 years.
To me that is like automobile celibacy.

I did tow recently from Salt Lake to St George Utah, 4 hours at 80 mph on a slight climbing grade.
Ram crew cab dually diesel with an enclosed trailer, 800lbs of torque and 30 gallons of fuel.
That was fun.

My old work truck, '93 WT1500......loved that sliding window!


It's replacement, '02 Silv. 1500 w/no sliding back window....had to improvise!





Either way......nothing like having your buddy with you in your truck!

I have always seen pickups as a work vehicle much like a hammer. The right truck or hammer for the project. If all you need is a carpenter hammer don't buy a 5 pound sledge hammer for the job, and even more important don't try to use a carpenter hammer as a sledge.

I have never owned a boat or cargo trailer or real pickup. I am not in that type of business and I don't have those hobbies that need one.

I was at the lake at the invite of some friends. We went to launch their boat and had to wait as someone was trying to get a large heavy house boat out of the water on a wet ramp. Two different small pickups tried and just spun tires trying to get the HP needed to tow. Finally one of the guys waiting to get out of the water went over with his humongous F450 and hooked up, and just idled along with the torque of a diesel and pulled it out with ease. It was just amazing, and he had the right tool for the job. I bet that thing sucks to go get groceries with, but for pulling a heavy load it was not even trying.

And it seems crazy. If the Accord is that good a vehicle, it should last a lot longer than 3 years. But I know it's not uncommon for folks to constantly trade their car in.

I can load 16' boards on my trailer, or 12' boards in my Volvo, easier than a truck with a 6', or even an 8' bed.

I would be a lot happier with our Outback if the rear window opened. It's got a power rear hatch, which is a huge pain if you want to carry something that doesn't allow the hatch to fully close.
