If I was a watch guy, I’d own a Rolex. For the same reason I’ve owned several Porsches. I love the way they are put together. Quality mechanicals throughout.

What watch are you wearing that is impressing people? Can they see the outline of the bezel and crown?

Then do not be scared to wear it, just be smart about it.

Do you refuse to drive your Targa because you are afraid of being car jacked?

While I can understand the premise of Paul starting this thread, and it may be one of the only non pool or Mustang threads he has started in quite some time, just use common sense.

There are 10s of millions or rolex in existence, and sure millions on wrists in a typical day. Probably double that or more in fakes on the wrists.

I think your chances of being assaulted for one are exceptionally low, and near zero if you don't wear it "high risk areas"

I remember visiting NYC back in 2009. I wanted to take my Canon SLR camera and some wide angle lenses for architecture. "No way hose" I said, someone would surely swipe it from my neck. I got up there and EVERY single tourist was toting a Digital SLR strapped around their neck with impunity. I wouldn't try it today though.

I really don't see how a thief could differentiate between a Rolex, fake, or even an Invicta rolex knockoff from a distance (unless there was some other giveaway, like your tuxedo or something). Specially with winter and jackets coming up.

Hey... What section of town is this poolhall Paul plays at anyways?

I've had my Doxa for 12 years. It needs servicing now and I have a friend who can do it.

I've never seen another Doxa on a wrist or in a shop, anywhere. Nobody knows what it is.

everyone who gets into pricey watches becomes a watch snob to some extent, its unavoidable
Old eyes here...so I like the Sinn. It's easy readability of white hands/black dial. Perhaps that why I've always been attracted to the field watch school of watch design.

One of my long ago buddies was twice retired, from two successful careers. He said his goal was to spend his money before he died, but he could not even come close unless he got into large boats or airplanes and he was too old for those.

He had a Rolex President sitting on the computer desk and it was all covered in diamonds. Personally I though it was rather gaudy. Most people would assume it was fake diamonds, but they were real.

It was sitting on the invoice from where he bought it and it was over 60 grand back in the 1980s. He was using a brick of solid silver as a paperweight.

His phone number was one digit higher than mine. So all the digits except the last one was the same as mine. I was at his house and he got a wrong number from someone looking for me. He handed me the phone, and we were all laughing. Billion to one odds of a wrong number call and I was there to answer it.

Watch the videos...the muggers use scouts...

LOL! Yep, pool halls are usually in dangerous areas of town. The Cue Ball in Salem, OR is no exception. May sound crazy, but in there you may spot a pool cue worth more than a Rolex...

(edit) But it's just not the cues...big money matches happen. Often streamed live on pay per view, backers money involved. Not unusual for these to have $100K going to the winning side, and nobody takes checks. 1,000 $100 bills isn't really that large of a pile...

Precisely MRM's point.

I feel sorry for people that live in, or find it necessary to travel to, areas that are deemed to be so unsafe you can't wear a good watch.

I guess I'm spoiled, it's something I would never consider.

Regarding the actual topic,

More and more, displays of wealth are like wearing a deer costume in the woods during hunting season.

I'm assume they were targeted because of the venue that they were coming from and how they presented more than that the thieves saw the watch and knew it was a real Rolex

Discerning criminals, stealing watches and pool cues, but walking home and leaving the Mustangs behind...

Yep..to each his own. But no, not to me either...but then, I'm a player, not a cue collector. The top pros these days tend to play with whatever production cue company offers the best sponsorship deal. Be assured those cues aren't just grabbed off the assembly line....they are very carefully tuned to the specifications the pro likes.

https://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/article-10089371/Mother-two-45-scarred-life-attack-masked-gang-tried-steal-15-000-Rolex.html

excerpts from the link above:
Quote:
Darren Seaman, 53, and his wife, Laura, 45, had enjoyed an evening out dining at celebrity hotspot Sexy Fish, when they were set upon by three masked men near Berkeley Square in the early hours of Sunday morning.

The couple, from Southend-on-Sea, Essex, had been walking back to the Langham Hotel with two friends at around 2.15am, when the masked trio attempted to steal Mr Seaman's submariner watch.

They came at me. One went for my watch. I was windmilling with him. The other two came round. I was attacked. It was terrible.

'As I was fighting with this one, Laura said: "Leave my husband alone." Then one of the others hit her.

The couple say they were told by police that an ambulance could take up to 40 minutes. They were escorted to St Thomas's Hospital by a minicab driver who saw the attack firsthand.

The cabbie said he saw the thieves running from the scene empty-handed, before fleeing in a Volkswagen Golf.

A Met Police spokesman said: 'Police were called at around 2am on Sunday, October 10, to a report of an attempted robbery on Bruton Street, W1.

'Officers attended and spoke to the victims, a man in his 50s and a woman in her 40s. They reported that three men wearing balaclavas had approached them and attempted to grab a watch from the man's wrist.

'When the woman asked them to stop, she was punched in the face.

'The watch was not taken and the men made off in a nearby car.

'Both victims suffered injuries and were taken to hospital. They have since been discharged but will continue to need treatment.

Funny that a dude named Seaman has a submariner. He should have gone with a Seamaster...

So much flexing going on, this thread is golden

I don't wear a watch but wear cheap clothes, even cheaper shoes and drive a cheap car

Always feel comfortable and safe when I'm out and about as everyone thinks I'm the one most likely to be a mugger
