I had to go back to this as I am confused (and that affected my response). Alexander played Isles and on NCIS (IMHO, also the least shabby of the two). Angie Harmon played Jane Rizzoli.

Ah, my mistake. I've only seen one or two episodes of R&I and got them reversed.

I don't think you can make a "wrong" choice either way.

As soon as you see that monster, you know for sure at some point he and Reacher will be in fight. Likely in the last episode.

Just watched the first one. Not bad. Good enough that I will watch the other two tonight.

Just watched the first 2 episodes of season 3. (Does Mrs Noah have a thing for Alan Ritchson? She seemed all too eager to turn it on tonight.)
They were OK, but the thing I cannot get out of my head is the accent by the female FBI agent. I get that the show is set in Maine. But she's got some weird cross between a Maine accent and a Boston accent that I've never heard before. It's like fingernails on a chalkboard for me.

She's British? Then just stick to a bland American accent and call it a day. She got too cute with the accent thing and failed.

I liked the first three episodes better than most TV (and maybe better than the second season), but I still like the Tom Cruise movie versions better. I do understand that the TV guy is more like the book version, but that does not change things with me. I struggle to identify with the giant, musclebound guy who can and does break normal people in two (even young puny ones) ...and like the more normal guy that needs grit, skill and determination to succeed.
Instead of rooting for Cruise, the underdog with both cops and competent bad guys trying to kill him, in the TV version, it is like the bad guys don't really have a chance. In this season so far, Reacher also seems just a bit too dark to me...and seems to routinely break the law and to kill small time crooks indiscriminately...and gets the cops (supposedly good guys) to be pretty good with him doing so. They also seem to be trying very hard to market him as a sex symbol (to attract women and gay guy audience?) by his being largely unclothed rather often. I did like his female costar. Her accent did not bother me...although I would not know a Maine accent from a Boston one. Otherwise, she is a good actress and well-cast IMHO. Her character is somewhat believable (maybe a bit too much of the wiseass) and so far, she has not been Bruce Lee incarnate with the ability to beat up dozens of large men at the same time (as many females in action movies tend to be).

In this one, some of his kills have been too quick and easy. That aspect seemed "off" compared to previous seasons to me. Quote:

I like Cruise better too. I haven’t read the books, but maybe it’s the smaller guy with the sarcasm that does it for me. The new Reacher, just doesn’t deliver the lines, the same way Cruise does. Also, he walks like he’s got an egg between his ass cheeks.

That’s THE main premise of the books. That Reacher is an unstoppable monster of a man.
For anyone that read them Cruise is risible in that role. He’s about as realistic as Paddington would be cast as the lead in Cocaine Bear. |

The books are far better than the TV series, at least the early books. Less comedy, less killing, more believable. The characteristic that stands out most in the books is Reacher's intellect; how he can see things and understand things far in advance of the reader.
Cruise was never going to be believable although the production values in his two movies were pretty decent. Ritchson has promise but he's let down by plot elements and the writing. Better than nothing, not as good as it could be. |
