Speed cameras are a stupid idea come up with by stupid people (who probably do not drive).
Happened here. Threw out like a years worth of tickets, cameras still up

I don't think this will happen in CA. There were speed cameras here and there years ago and I think a State law banned them again. People like to drive how they see fit and don't think they are doing anything wrong. This is part of the basis for the crowd-sourced speed limits in CA we now have. By crowd-sourced I mean that speed limits must be raised according to the 85% speed. The algorithm is somewhat complicated. Assembly Bill 2363 funded looking at the way CA sets speed limits. I don't think anything happened in terms of changing how the speed limits are set. A new proposed law might provide a "loophole" in favor of local authorities to be able to set and keep their own limits - this the ability of local authorities to change the street category from e.g. collector to local without going through the State paperwork process. This will help local jurisdictions with enforcing speed limits using radar on streets that are posted for under 55mph.
Speeding tickets have the potential to clog the court system, my guess is law enforcement and the court system tend to shy away from giving out too many.

It won't be just that. Expect mayhem. There are dozens of ways to vandalize.

But I think a shotgun would be the most expedient. Or a paint gun.

that's just a radar indicator
it's not a speed camera and the issue is past 170 mph or around that speed, the camera cannot catch you in time because the narrow beam of detection

It's basically a cone
They must nab you IN that cone with the camera to proove that it was your car that did the speed measured by the camera

And at 170 mph.. the radar might actually detect the speed, but the camera will be to late to take a license plate picture. And it won't even go off any

All this does not apply to ground loop systems, those can be set up to do much wider parameters as they do not rely on a radar cone angled over a straigh road.. that is fixed infra and the camera needs not be set up angled so the car can be kept in view longer

But fixed infra really isn't a problem only an idiot gets caught by those, cause everybody knows where they are and waze or any other app will tell ya..

The real problem is the cops with cameras on a tripod in the bushes... But those will typically not get you at 170mph + because of their setup

note, people who vandalize em are idiots, because they are payed with tax money, so you burn up stuff that you'll pay taxes for to replace.. it's idiotic. Especially for fixed infra.. that is in plain sight.

Unless I had plans to be regularly in esPAIN, I would ave ignored the living chit out of thaem tickets and them tickets would have become administrative dust in their archives..

Hell even if you do end up on their border, it's doubtful they would bug you over it, and if so, you could simply pretend you never got any tickets..
I figured they'd charge the rental company who would then charge me. What can I say, I'm a boy scout.

Big brother wants to control every aspect of your life. Spending huge amounts to install nationwide spy cameras to go after average citizens while allowing violent criminals and thieves to run rampant. Current Federal priorities are so out of wack that it would be ludicrous if not so alarming. Say no now before it is too late.

they legally can't do that.
the rental cannot charge you because that takes away your right to appeal the fine
if they do, refute the charges with yer cc company

As such they must forward your info to the police , and then the police has to send you the ticket, which you can ignore the chit out of cause well they won't come find you in the US of A.
At the worst side, you might get stopped if you ever enter the country via an airport border of some sort, and even then you can pretend to be unaware, deaf dumb and stupid .. and worst case pay on the spot

I've recieved speed camera tickets twice in Europe. First time was In Poland, on the outskirts of Poznan. I was driving my girlfriend's uncle's car, and he got the ticket. Obviously I am not going to ignore that one. Second time was in a rental car on a French autoroute. Ticket came directly to me in the mail in the US. Didn't ignore that one, either.

you realize speed limits have been around since 1901 right?

like speeding not being legal is nothing new.

the issue is Due Process, not whether speeding should be legal or not

well obviously you don't wanna screw over the uncle, but rental companies aren't on the hook for rental drivers...

i understand there are issues with speed cameras. but you'd think the self proclaimed champion of "law and order" would grasp that speeding is a crime, always has been a crime, and enforcing it, isn't the government trying to control every avenue of your life. its just another way to enforce the law. they've been trying to stop speeding since 1901.

Where I live (Nassau County, NY) we used to have speed cameras, but enough people complained to local politicians... that they were removed....

We do have red light cameras still...

And we did have a good citizen/vigilante who used a painters pole to re-aim the cameras...

Unfortunately he was eventually caught.

My desire to avoid spending vast amounts of tax dollars (intended to repair roads and bridges) on equipment to be used for surveillance of American citizens is a pretty simple concept.

I am shocked that such a simple notion left you so confused that you believe others are not aware of speed limits.

I give up. Did someone say that speeding was not a crime?

Does not having speeding cameras make speeding any less a crime?

Do you find that making up statements and attributing them to others helps your argument or just make you look stupid and dishonest?

BTW, according to the Secretary of Transportation, the plan also includes lowering speed limits.

The big problem with speed cameras: The revenue created is very attractive/addictive to government which means there here to stay.

They justify them using the "safety" argument but if you talk to a local cop off the record they will tell you that most of their resources are focused on traffic infringements because that raises revenue for the government.

We have them dotted all over town. Most major intersections have combined speed and red light cameras. There's one near my place that looks like a Christmas tree at night and it's in an industrial area. There's lots of heavy transport that use that intersection and often they can't stop when the light turns amber so they just plow through hoping they don't get "flashed".

Years ago when they were first introduced a guy drove around in an old truck and knocked over a bunch of them. It was a very expensive exercise to replace and fix them... But they didn't waste any time replacing them. At that time they were using Pro level Nikon film cameras with custom made large film magazines. The cops would have to change the film about once a week. Now they're using digital cameras that take the photo and send it back to Police headquarters immediately through the mobile phone network. They only visit the cameras about once a month now to clean and check them.

So how do you avoid getting "flashed"? - Don't speed or run red lights!

I bought a GPS Navigator that connects to my phone via Bluetooth so it can see live information about the traffic ahead. As I approach a red light or speed camera it gives me and an audible and visual warning. There's a fixed speed camera near my house and if my mobile isn't connected to my GPS Navigator I will not get a warning.

Revenues tream??? is that a big problem? if they are in a fixed position??
I mean, I have a lead foot, I consider any ticket i get a statistical win in my favor, cause ach time i get one, i chuckle, and say "1 out of 200" y'all still loosing
And that is from cops hiding in the bushes with a tripod

I never get caught from a fixed speed camera
why, because they are fixed !!

Anybody who drives through one of those, was either stupid ,or not paying attention to the road, in both cases, it's a self inflicted tax

2 things are important

1 The revenue stream can only happen if people are stupid enough to drive through those at speed
IF people are paying attention, THEN there will be no revenuestream!!

2 Governement debt and spending is not conditional on this specific revenue stream!! spend first, figure out income later is there MO
IF the governement cannot get this revenu THEN they will get it via other taxation
