Insight... Whether Uber/Lyft is better, worse or the same than back in the day, it WILL be better than a cab. Period. So much better than a cab... So, if you were willing to climb into a cab, you'll be willing to climb into an Uber. You can ride without cash, you can have them (with permission) swing through a drive thru on the way back to your hotel, you can talk history and politics and sports with them, you can have them play your music from your phone, you can have them swing by the liquor store on the way to picking you up so you'll have a 6-pack ready when you get to the hotel, etc. Cleaner, safer, quieter and probably still cheaper than a cab. And, since it's all app based, you know exactly where you're being picked up and when (almost to the second), and exactly where you plan on being dropped off, and when.

I have 207 5 stars - would like to know what driver gave me a 1-star rating. I have never had a bad interaction with a driver - so no idea where that would have come from. My only guess is the trip where the driver was one of those "pump the gas pedal" drivers and he made my co-worker car-sick. Asked them to pull over so he could barf...

I like using UBER...it is handy and saves me money, but it might be a risky profession. Those of you that do it (or use it), be careful out there. https://www.wpxi.com/news/top-stories/man-arrested-after-body-woman-driving-uber-found-shot-dumped-monroeville/E6YWQTECYRCEHGPP2TM4MQYXXE/

Why is it that none of us have 100% driver rating completion? Everyone in this thread has 10-20% of the drivers not rating, yet you make it seem like rating is an integral part of getting the next fair, or at least a tip. Do drivers ignore 10-20% of their fairs, or do 10-20% tip cash, and then the driver's just don't tip them? Because, I tip cash for a good rating, and if they're not rating me since they don't have to, I'm gonna start burning cars down...

Drivers have to rate passengers immediately upon dropping them off but it has nothing to do with your tip, which we do not know about yet. It is 100% based on rider behavior. I just gave two young women a 1-star rating simply because they were having a loud, rude conversation and I never want to see their stupid asses again. She might wind up giving me a tip but the deed is done on my end. Maybe she will figure out someday why her rating keeps going down but probably not. If I'm ever in the position to have to drive for Uber, I'm going to just off myself.

710 Trips - Uber user for 3,747 days 4.67 rating 418 - 5 star 38 - 4 star 20 - 3 star 11 - 2 star 13 - 1 star Not the greatest, but I would love to see the distribution over time. Being the main one to request ubers for large groups of people to/from bars in my mid 20s probably contributed to most of my 1-2 stars. And that one guy who almost killed my wife and I with his awful driving probably didn't appreciate the way I spoke to him.

I drove a cab 100 years ago in college and really enjoyed it. I had thought about driving Uber part time for a while and finally just took the plunge after getting fully vaccinated against Covid. I had a lot of time on my hands, wasn't working for a while. I meet a lot of nice people from all over the country and world doing it here. Pretty flight attendants from Singapore and Quatar, people on vacation from everywhere, etc. It would not be as fun in other places as it is here. Lastly, I need to feel good about what I do in order to sleep well at night. I've had plenty of opportunities to invest in highly profitable businesses that are not kosher but I'd rather drive for Uber and work only when I want, thank you very much.

Why do the numbers not add up, if a driver has to rate you before moving on?

For whatever reason, not all riders have been rated by the drivers. Maybe it was possible to not rate a rider in the past.

Leo Carillo had flush toilets and showers, Sycamore and La Jolla had Outhouse/ Porta Johns. They knew I could drive large trucks, had a driver's license and offered me the job of "Pooper Pumper". It was an easy gig. You had this vacuum truck where you would take a big sucker hose, throw it into the "Hell Hole" and start pumping. You could tell when it was done when the vacuum pump hit a high pitch. Unless you got a low pitch, that meant a clog. Usually a a large "Tampoon" pad was stuck and you'd just bang the the hose back and forth to get it loose. Sometimes it would "flip it's tail" like trout and you'd get a splash back (that sucked). Anyway, I digress. I was doing my duty along the beach and a guy had his young son waiting to use the bathroom I was servicing and remarked "I would never do that". My response was "Well you're not having to do it now are you? And if it meant feeding your son I bet you might think about doing it".

And to clarify, I don't mean to bag on you Scott R. Different strokes for different folks. We all have our strengths. Myself, I wouldn't last a day in a cubicle job, a "nuts on bolts" job, etc. I need to be outdoors and doing something different everyday. I've really been blessed to do the job that I get to do. "A Carny with a Dental Plan" as I like to say.

I don't travel much for work so I don't uber much. I still used taxis until a trip to LAX a few years ago. Not only were there no taxis to be had, my uber ride from the airport to orange county was about $80 compared to coworkers taxi rides of $100. I don't think I've taken a taxi since except maybe at an international airport where taxi was easy. For the few business trips I take, I rarely rent a car anymore unless I have planned driving to do. 2556 days 33 trips 5.00 rating

5 Star rating, with 100% 5 stars. Only one trip I am just not out of town, and without a car very often. I was in Herndon, VA and made one trip and it was a driver I would like to have spent a few hours at a bar chatting with. He was great, and we got along great. Using Uber to me is has one goal, use it less that getting a prostate exam or a root canal. I prefer to drive myself.

What % of the fare is a reasonable tip? I haven't ever been in an Uber and my last cab ride was 5 years ago at least.

If the fare is really low (like a low bill at a diner) I don't usually use a percentage. I went to lunch with a guy once, his bill for lunch was $6, and I think he tipped 90¢. I wouldn't wait on anyone for 45 mins for 90¢. I'm more likely to tip $4-5 in a situation like that.

I was at Dahlgren Naval Base one night very late and needed to get to Fredericksburg to pick up a car...and the young guy that picked me up was a Navy pilot. He said that he did it because he was bored and there was not much to do at night in the area...and it helped him meet people. We had a lot in common to talk about, so it was a great ride. At first, there were no drivers signed n in the area, so I kept checking for an hour or so before he popped up. It is usually easier to get a ride for somewhere (like an airport or big city) to nowhere than vice versa. It is perfect for when we go to one of our vacation homes because we don't need a rental car (we keep a car in the garage). I had my car break down late one night in Maryland (near BWI) on the way to my rural VA home from the airport. After an hour or so of trying to get a tow truck, I was able to coax it into the parking lot of a closed repair shop. I got an UBER ride home with a very nice young man who told me that he had never been out of Maryland and never drove on a rural road before...much less at night. When we got near my home well after midnight (very dark and spooky to him) ...I could see that he was having second thoughts (envisioning a scene from Deliverance or at least a chainsaw killer/cannibal movie). Probably a good thing that I looked old and harmless. I don't see how he made much money on that trip as it was about an hour and a half...and unless he could get a fare going back, another hour and a half to drive back (plus gas) ...and it was about $80. At first, I tried to give them a cash tip...but they tell me they are not allowed cash tips and must get them through the App...so that is what I do.

Pretty much on any ride under $15, I am tipping $5 minimum. Above that, my tip is going to be 20%-40% depending on how they drive, how clean the car is, how many people are with me and what weather/traffic is like. When its miserable on the roads, the tip is going up.

When rideshare prices started going up noticeably in 2020, I started asking drivers about the pay. One guy showed me the app on his phone and he was making $1500 a weekend, going hard on Fri/Sat/Sunday. I was impressed. I got approved for driving for both Uber and Lyft but still procrastinated it for months until one of my best friends said, "why don't you just turn on the app and give a couple of rides? See if you like it?" Duh...too logical for me, I guess. I did as instructed and found it addicting...the app feeds you another ride before you drop off the current passenger when it's busy and the next thing I knew, I'd been driving for hours and really needed to find a place to whiz. I thought my bladder was going to burst. Now, I know all of the clean restrooms in town but it was really busy then. In the city at least, the job involves a lot of skilled driving in traffic and dealing with people but also fighting the algorithm that is the Uber drivers app. It wants to send you where it wants you to go or needs you and you might have different goals. Usually, you do. It's a combination of poker and navigation...a small amount of luck and a lot of strategy. Out in a rural area, it would be completely different, I would imagine that you take any and all rides offered. People probably sit at home or work in the garage with it on until a ride comes up(?) Also, that is the first I've heard about not being allowed cash tips. Most people tip through the app but I've received some cash tips. Last edited by speeder; 02-21-2022 at 08:10 AM..
