Well maybe if you'd quit hitting on violinists and start scoping out some seamstresses you wouldn't be in this predicament!

My Wife has a Brother LX3817 it does what she needs it to do and more. She's not into sewing, more of a knitter so she doesn't use it much.

Now my Son, he's in the 501st (Star Wars nerds) and he has used to make parts of his "Tie Pilot" uniform and loves it.

Seem to be pretty cheap: https://www.amazon.com/Brother-LX3817-Lightweight-Full-Size-Machine/dp/B0785FPSV3

So here's one like mjohnson posted he and his wife bought:

https://shopgoodwill.com/item/154332391

I'd go for this but my wife already has enough sewing machines and she won't let me start collecting them for the granddaughters, yet.
I'd buy this before getting anything new. All metal construction inside I'd be willing to bet.

If you do some research on Bernina you'll find they have a test machine running that has been going for a long, long, long time without let up. Something like 3 years straight at the time I looked a few years ago. They are built to last, and you won't find new ones at that price point lasting as long today.

I think this is a steal at the BIN price:
https://www.ebay.com/itm/155231331873?hash=item2424822621:g:J-QAAOSwisFjXqSN&amdata=enc%3AAQAHAAAAsJte2HLFF1RTWIe7MBENK9UMrZ6Dq fpD4kAIdULs%2FSX5axdO%2F51sGi3MZpVjt8WOnkv4jliMhiO E%2BUDccA0rvnOc7PkczKw3VreqxFehBBXk2hgImRrGB7D0SWa fTjMs%2B6eDDdCQbRIO187oi32H9vEvYqgQNLUPherxM%2BxPC icQo2Z0sWei6ub0OuH5zT0dQeZ1i4D7qZMVWY72ypZKbdLQrs4 8kcgCZeEJPw5i7Fd4%7Ctkp%3ABk9SR4qSyoeLYQ
We paid $1200 for each of ours used many years ago. This one looks like new as the bed isn't worn at all. It is only a straight stitch machine but will last forever if taken care of.
I offered to buy it as a spare for my wife but she doesn't want to store it. She uses one every day quilting, and the other one sits in the quilt frame and is used for quilting the quilts when ready.

My MIL passed away a year ago and my wife ended up with her PFAFF sewing machine that was about 30 years old. It was the top of the line model when new, probably $800-1000. It still worked and the MIL was pretty good with it but hadn't been used in about 4-5 years.

My wife doesn't want it so she takes it to a repair shop to see if they'll buy it or have it appraised. They don't want it but say she you put it on-line for $500 and see what happens. So she lists it on the typical sites and of course no bites for months. She starts dropping the price 100 every month and it gets to $200 and she get a response from a women that lives about 45 minutes away and wants to see it. She shows up and wants it and of course offers $100 and my wife takes it. Deal done, $100 richer.

The thing that doesn't make sense is the buyer. She drives an hour and half round trip and is driving a new Lexus SUV. She says she doesn't know how to sew. She could have gone to her local Walmart and bought a new in the box machine with a warranty and a how to video and a help line. But who am I get give her advice and nix the sale. I just wanted ith machine out of my garage.

Now we also have a "serger machine" for sale if anyone needs one.

We've been sewing without computers for quite a few years - so though this thing has annoyed us, it's never failed us. This is a sewing machine that our great grandparents (or before) could understand and fix.

Adding technology is not necessarily an improvement...

Don't get me wrong, I love a good mechanical sewing machine.
I also know what the latest computer driven machines can do and are capable of doing and it is nothing short of amazing.

I was surprised I could actually find one like you had, for sale. That is a good machine. Kind of wish my wife would let me buy it.

Don't know actually. I'll look tonight.

I'm sure you'd like another one.

Oh, I like that. The quality of it. I wish shoe manufactures would buy one.

I bought a pair of expensive Salomon hiking boots to use as work boots. Loved them, then the soles started falling off. All that stitching and none of it was used to sew the upper to the sole. Stupid pricks.
