What did He Think would Happen Next??
Fom John Correia's Active Self Protection channel on YouTube:
Honestly, I never condone violence, but I think this guy really had it coming. No one "wins", of course, in any road rage incident, and it's always best to just not engage. Keep driving, leave, settle down, live to drive another day. That said, it looks like the bigger guy getting out of the truck might have been trying to de-escalate this. He kept putting his hands in the air, palms up, finally got his phone out, was looking like maybe he was going to call 911 or something. Totally non-aggressive, in spite of this idiot in his face. Until said idiot slapped the phone... Not a bad left hook for an out of shape old guy. Straight and to the point. The idiot never saw it coming. Some of us will say he "cold cocked" him unfairly, but I would disagree. The man was defending himself at that point, not know how much further the idiot was going to push it. The police and the DA agree - no charges filed. What think the PPOT brain trust?

Pickup Truck Guy should have stayed in the truck. In fact, perhaps should not have stopped at all. Might have been best to park in front of a police station instead.
Pickup Truck Guy is a bit bigger, but both guys are decently sized. Only a small advantage for Pickup Truck Guy, IMHO. Other Guy had it coming. Other Guy made the first physical move and Pickup Truck Guy was totally right to cold cock Other Guy. Normally, the first-move advantage is huge but Other Guy was, inexplicably, just not even imagining a physical response from Pickup Truck Guy. The big advantage here for Pickup Truck Guy was not size. It was situational awareness. Pickup Truck Guy was calm. Other Guy was not thinking. Pickup Truck Guy then showed further good judgment by not going anywhere near Seizure Guy. Pickup Truck Guy: 3 Other Guy: 0

Didn't hurt that PTG happened to be a lefty. My god, he barely drew back and brown shoe guy was lights out.
(Note to self... cool your jets in traffic...)

My $.02.
When you physically touch someone, especially in an altercation, game on. Brown shoe guy got one of many outcomes coming to him. Glad the truck guy wasn't charged. EDIT: Surprised it was a Chevy guy. Maybe his Ram was in the shop and he borrowed his friend's truck. That said, I'm sure he was ****ting bricks when the guy goes into convulsions. Pretty scary to know you just did that to someone. Good that he was ok in the end. Net net, both are dumbasses. And the cop in the other video is an idiot. I hope he gets sued for everything he's got for "causing" that accident.

The pickup guy might have saved brown shoes life. Brown shoes will think twice about confronting another driver at their door again and the next guy could have a gun.

At its simplest level, you are correct. At a higher level, the one most of us care about, Shaun is correct.

I'd bet all of this was over something that was not important.
If I slapped someones phone out of their hand I'd expect a punch in the face. - Being the first one to go physical is never a good idea but everybody has a right to protect themselves. I lowered my expectation of other drivers long ago. People make mistakes and that's it.

When thing get stupid road ragey. Don't get out of your car! Just leave ASAP and create a gap so things can de-escalate. People lose their minds over the stupidest sheit and you never know who has a gun on their belt.

At this year's pumpkin patch, I had a very similar thing happen. Fat mouthy guy assaults one of my parking guys. Slaps the 2-way radio out of his hand. My guy used the code word: "Avalanche". In less than 30 seconds we had the mouthy slappy guy surrounded by at least 12 of my guys, and one girl LOL. He challenged all of us to a fight, including me. I was getting around to explain to him that he's going to end up having a bad night the way he's pushing things. Suffice to say he ended up on the ground bleeding. I kicked him off the property at that point.

I think some people drive around with their hand on the horn button. They can press it faster than my foot can press the gas pedal.🙄

PTG is very lucky. The other guy could have hit his head and died. It would not be the first time a single hit caused death, and not even really that rare. I can't even imagine how it would affect you to kill someone for something that was likely not that big a deal. Hopefully, both guys will learn from this. Unfortunately, the guy that got hit rather than learning "it's not that important, maybe I should relax" might have "learned" that "instead of trying to talk it out, I'll shoot first next time." Unfortunately, some people are that stupid these days.

Again, too easy to say "let them go" when you know all of the details after the fact. How about this video turns into a new story, where the kid takes off, the cop lets them, and then over the course of the next 4-6 hours, the 16yo and two 12yo girls go on an armed robbery spree where they shoot a half a dozen people at various gas stations. Then everyone would be screaming "the cop had a chance to stop them!"

I pretend that every bad actor is just stupid. I am sure that a lot of people classify me as stupid, though most of my bad acts are intentional. Sometimes, you just have to let go. |

Get off my lawn!
|
Many years ago one of my computer buddy geeks was a retired Army ranger. He was a very unassuming friendly guy. Unless you got in his personal space. We were at a restaurant and some jerk put his hand on Marty's shoulder and used him as a support as he leaned down pressing into Marty's shoulder to grab the ketchup off of our table instead of going to the counter to ask for some. Marty, grabbed his arm, spun around and decked the guy. The two buddies sitting with the jerk jumped up, but saw how fast their friend was dispatched and decided to help get their friend up off the floor. A detective in plain clothes was next to our table and came over and said he saw the whole thing, and would testify that jerk on the floor started it. He told the three guys to leave.
It was over in seconds and I knew to never fight with a Ranger.

All of the good fights I have seen were over in maybe 20 seconds. When guys start walking around each other in defensive postures, I just go back in the bar.
Jeff asks what Other Guy was thinking would happen next. Apparently he expected nothing to happen. Starting with the moment he slapped the cell phone from Pickup Truck Guy, his eyes should have been wide open without blinking. Stuff happens fast.
