MY bad in using the semantic/ vernacular form of " garden variety". I really meant it simply. looks like a garden variety turbo 964.... nothing else... and nobody off the street would ever ID is such... but the tweaks , internals ( not much new here except the 956 motor tweaks) rarity and .... but if you value overall performance. it seems the cgt just kills it by and order of magnitude. jmho...

Compounding that, according to the interwebs, 76 of those S models were built as the 965 flachbau mutation (not the same as the 911/930 flacbaus) - so a "regular" fender 3.6 Turbo S like the one on BAT would be even rarer.

Wasnt the 965 turbo 3.6 cis? Pretty sure it is, maybe the last ar to get that rube Goldberg system

Not condoning the pricing on either of these cars but basically the best of breed for the iconic air-cooled turbo. A special edition of an already special car. 993tt was a way better car but ushered in the modern turbo.

Cgt is pretty common by hyper car standards.

Really killer non S turbo 3.6 in an aubergine purple sold for 400k on bat last week. I can almost see that.

I always follow the 965 cars as they have always been my favorite p-car and they have always commanded a higher price. More than the 993 TT, even way before the market went crazy..

I bought one for $10k (@ 15 years ago..) and stuffed it into a 78 SC.. I’m guessing @$20k today for a complete engine..

+1

I think they were around $200k when new.

Early 964 turbo had 3.3 CIS, quite similar to the 930 3.3. Although I seem to recall an added electronic module to fiddle with CIS control pressure under boost. And they dropped the very cold Bosch W-3 DPO plugs first spec'd in the 70's when the factory thought they were building 250 track beasts for racing homologation so the 934/935 would be eligible...

Second gen 964 turbo 92-94 (often dubbed "Turbo 2" by owners) got the 3.6 motor with Motronic DME, electronic injectors, speed/reference sensors etc. It's an EFI car like the 951, launched 6 years earlier in 1986.

There may be a way to tell just by looking at them, but I don't know what it is - from the outside, both generations of 965 look identical to me...

94 3.6l turbo is k jetronic cis, 99% sure would love to see evidence to the contrary though. It did have more electronic bandaids than earlier systems but still mechanical injection

OK, this statement seems to be entirely incorrect, as PET for 1994 shows a CIS fuel distributor with a 930 part #, and 2 different CIS air flow sensors...

I must have misunderstood or remembered the conversation with my wrench. Or maybe the car on the ramp he gestured towards was a 993 turbo, and I thought it was a 965...

My apologies...

The 965 cars were CIS.
