Ms. Rocket is an ICU nurse. More than once she has seen where someone has DNR tattooed on their chest.

Only if I get to chose who is a candidate. If anyone else sets the guidelines then the answer is NO!

(My obvious point is that I am not in favor of euthanasia and I don't trust the govt or doctors to make those decisions). How about if we can do retroactive abortions on certain politicians?
I think that was either a Twilight Zone episode or Alfred Hitchcock where a person was told to push this button and someone, somewhere that you don't know will die.

This actually hits close to home (dementia) as I watched a very good friend, who hard Parkerson's and developed into dementia and another close friend, crossed the final finish Line Thursday morning. He, like my friend Ash was very successful and talented, talented enough to be the IMSA Crew Chief of the year while he helped return Brumos to its former glory, he also worked for AJ Foyt. Until this past year, Jim's wife would tell me that when I called and she told Jim I was on the phone, that he would revert back to the Jim every one knew. So, we look at it that he is in a better place now. I remember him slipping while talking to me, he asked me if I remembered the tree that we played on that his Grandfather planted. All I could do was agree . I was driving a tow truck to retrieve Police cars during the Watts Riots right before I was born (and the stories about what he was doing while the Riots were going on and that the police gave him a gun and told him not to take any chances if he felt threatened) and sadly, it appears that another long time friends is in early stages.

That’s a great idea except it would make me look, you know, like, cheap.

Instead of a tramp stamp it would be a nozap snap.

You may have missed the point. If they have DNR tattooed on their chest, they probably would not want to be in the ICU.

I guess a tattoo is not a legal document like a living will…

Family cemetery plots. My sister asked if I wanted to be buried in the Douglas family cemetery plot - I'd be the sixth generation hole in the ground. "I said No Way! Not with those miserable bastards for eternity. Cremate me and throw my ashes on the beach."

Yeah. What if it stood for Dominion National Railway?

A friend of mine died from ALS he had 2 1/2 years from onset of symptoms to the end. It was a downward spiral throughput. Although he was Catholic, he thought about it.
That was 15 years ago. Today he would have the option.

Sometimes there is no "good" choice.

Should society take another look at human euthanasia ?

I won’t go out like my mother did. I watched a YouTube video where a man who was diagnosed with terminal cancer with zero hope for living except in a tremendous amount of pain who also lost his wife to cancer, chose to take a premade concoction to end his life. He first had a big party with all his friends and loved ones and the next day he crossed the rainbow bridge. It was beautiful.

He made the movie.

My Dad and I talked about this when he had cancer. He had a firm DNR/no extraordinary measures, etc. but he also wanted to exit this mortal coil on his own terms should his condition warrant him making that choice.

It was not an option for him but the discussion was very enlightening. He passed away rather quickly.

Different for the ones that get Parkinsons, ALS or dementia, though

The wife and I already have this worked out.

If you have not made your wishes known, with respect to the matter of discussion, y'all best address it tout suite. Never know when you are going to get struck by lightning or run over by a damned old train

I didn’t read all the posts. But, Oregon has a medically assisted suicide law. I hope I don’t have to use it. But I am SO VERY GLAD that this option is available if I am ever in a situation that calls for it.

Tough questions.

When my dad was near his end, and gasping for breath even on 100% oxygen after a heart valve replacement, he said to me, "A man should not have to live like this!" and I had to agree. He was in a critical care facility, and under doctors care. I was very sad to see him die, but I know I do not want to "live" like that.

Damn, that's brutal.

For more than five millennia civilized man has made a distinction between humans and animals. I understand all the concerns notes above, and have been through such troubled waters with my Alzheimer's mother.

That said, a society that legalizes euthanasia opens the door for rules for same. And how long will it before government begins to dictate the reduction or elimination for things like Medicare, health insurance coverage etc for those who do not wish to be "put down"?

IOW, do you really want the government to control this?

My $.02.

What about mental illness?
I know someone that really wanted to end it. If I would have given them a gun they would have used it. Now 3 years later they feel better and there is hope.

Agreed. I want to go out on my own terms and not be a burden mentally or physically on my family.

I told Ms. Rocket I wanted to be cremated and my ashes spread on the track at VIR. (Virginia International Raceway).
