But also I think partially because as friendly neighbors of many years, I wouldn’t expect them to ask me for the same, I’d hope they’d naturally assume it was ok for them to do. Honestly, to me it would be silly for them to bother asking for such a trivial thing. But I guess it’s wrong for me to impute my thinking on them.

Our quasi-extremist garbage company is pushing hard towards recycling and gives us a ridiculously small garbage can (like 1.5 kitchen bag worth, that's it), and charges 3x more for a "normal" trashcan. I got one of those big ones (while kids live here) and I frequently tell my neighbors to go for it if there is space in mine as theirs are overflowing ;-) Cost me nothing more to be nice, in fact since I pay a lot more it makes me happy someone is using it. In return I occasionally use their recycle can if necessary, the unspoken agreement on my street is "if it's on the street for collection, it's fair game".

However I'm not perfect. When someone parks overnight on the street spot right in front on my house ("MY spot") I have this weird urge to piss on their car ;-) I resist it most times.

You should see what gets put in mine in the alley. Now it's my fault for not bringing it inside the gate. Up 'till now I just didn't have the room. I sold my big Delta Unisaw, so I have some room now.

At each end of my alley there is a liquor store. Lots of people grab a beverage, down it and put it in my can. I get the dog siht too. I used to rinse out my receptacles but we ran out of water.

My neighbor, woman, is nice looking. Her 21yo daughter is hot, but her ex boyfriend is a total D-bag that apparently used to hit her.

A couple of years ago, D-bag was also living at neighbor's house (something I would have never allowed) and his sister was living there as well. D-bag has no prospects, wants to play pro baseball but works at a batting cage. Neighbor is/was out of town frequently. When she is gone the kids can't figure out when to take the cans to the curb and more importantly that after the truck comes they need to take the cans back to the house. Cans sometimes sit at the curb for a week.

To answer the OP question: we have 2 garbage cans, 2 recycle cans, and one yard waste. Next door 21yo daughter and/or D-bag cleaned out the cans from one of their cars and put it in one of my recycle cans. No big deal and I wouldn't have cared but they put it in the can that we never use. If I hadn't looked that stuff would have sat there for months.

So yes, I minded. Took the bag out and threw it in front of their garage. A few days later when mom got back she apologized. I said it wasn't a problem and if I had been asked I would have said yes and furthermore if they had put it in the can that is used even less of a problem.

I'm in touch with this emotion.

We had a neighbor in Virginia that had several cars but the least amount of curb length in front of their house. He would park a car or two across the street in front of another neighbor's house. Verboten. He knew my position on this and didn't use my curb space. I think I even had more cars than they did

It's just not cool in the 'burbs.

If the truck is down the street and on the way to pick up the trash or recycle cans, no I don't care at all. If it is after they are emptied, and they put ther trash in, yea, I mind. That has never happened.

I have two of the large wheelie bins, and one recycle bin. Most of the time, we don't even have a trash can full. When my master gardener wife is clearing out plant debris in the fall we might fill up two trash cans.

I've had a bag over my limit and just waited for the truck and tossed it in myself. He didn't seem to mind.

Our trash pickup is usually about 6:00 AM. The entire neighborhood put their wheelie bins on the curb the night before. I usually go bring mine back behind our house shortly after I get up and eat breakfast.

Every other month we have "large trash" day and we can put out old appliances, dead water heaters, stockade fence panels, mattresses or tree limbs. That greatly reduced the illegal dumping of trash. The scrappers all patrol the areas looking for appliances and lawn mowers and stuff that they can repair and sell. That helps reduce the landfill filling up.

We have a "free" hazardous waste disposal site we can take old paint cans, motor oil, antifreeze, brake fluid, florescent light bulbs, batteries, pesticides, and the like to drop off, if you show them your utility bill to prove you live in the city limits and have city trash service.

.
Our bulk pickup is quarterly I believe. There is one scheduled for later next week.

Neighbor across the street put his bulk items out this past weekend so we all get to see it for the next two weeks. It is basically the remnants of his son's wrecked vehicle, so it will sit there until the truck comes.

The city will fine someone here for putting it out more than 5 days early. If a code enforcement officer sees it it is a fine levied on the water-sewer-trash bill.

Our neighborhood home owners covenant also prohibits it. Trash cans must be stored out of street view. No long term parking on the streets. Parking in the garage, or driveway only. Overnight guests for visits can park on the street, but not the resident every night.

I like seeing a neat neighborhood and no cars parked on the street.

Our HOA is garbage. They get pissy about silly things but things that actually violate the HOA rules they balk on enforcement. I've been after them for a few months because a neighbor has about 4 or 5 adult males living in his house. Totally in violation but zero enforcement thus far.

Another neighbor parks his work van in driveway that has the company name all down the side. Totally in violation as well. No enforcement.

But if you build a fence to hide your trashcans from view they go ballistic

Our covenant is very clear and everyone that buys a house gets a copy before they buy, and they have to sign it before the sale. It is clear, the houses are single family residences only.

We had one lady that got a divorce, and a new boyfriend. She moved in with her boyfriend and rented the house to five 20 something guys, each with their own crappy vehicles leaking oil on the driveway and street.

We sent the home owner a letter and a copy of the covenant, and told her she had 60 days to get them out or we sue. Her boyfriend went ballistic and threatened to sue us. Evidently he even went to an attorney. He showed the covenant to the attorney and was told you are screwed, the neighborhood association will win. He was deflated, but backed down when his attorney said if you sue, you will be paying for all the legal cost of both sides and still loose.

The 5 singles guys moved out, and a single family moved in, and everyone is happy. Welcome to the neighborhood.

Most all of the house here have three car garages.

We have that and the line is a block long. I'm not working that hard to be green. One drop off. Half a million people.

Now they want to add a 3rd can for composable. And we pay for it. But compared to last month's $700 gas bill, I guess I can manage the 15 bucks.
