So, no not a hoot at all.
In theory, toast gets butter. Butter adds flavor, and maillard adds flavor (the browned bread has undergone maillard). Then there's the texture, a little crunch.

I love the texture of toast. Really good toasted bread is crunchy and warm on the outside and a bit chewy in the middle.
Toasted white bread is an abomination. White bread is only good for tomato sandwiches, and no known human would toast a tomato sandwich.
White bread toasted cheese sandwiches with tomato slices inside are wonderful! The bread is acting only as a hot cheese and tomato delivery vehicle letting those flavors shine.

I can't remember the last time that I had anything other than some sort of whole grain bread.

Yea, right. It just dries it out to be crunchy.

I never toast the whole wheat bread for my sandwiches. Just another messy step to make crumbs and a mess to clean up. I prefer soft fresh whole wheat bread.

And at restaurants when I order a hamburger, if the bun is toasted so much it is brown, I just toss the bun and eat the rest with a knife and fork.

I can only eat Tuna or Egg Salad on toasted bread even though I'm not really a fan of toast.

Agree and don't forget bacon/tomato sandwiches for untoasted white bread only.
and
I have never been in a BBQ joint that serves anything but white bread (and cheap white bread usually) and I have been in a LOT of BBQ joints here in the great state of TX.

Supposedly, someone went to the grocery store and bought these and found them packed with meth.

I suspect it is really a DEA or smuggler that was caught, but who knows.

Some great responses, but Heywood Banks did it best, with "Toast:" (3.3 million views):

Why not just make a P&J sandwich out of a couple of slices and put it back in the loaf?

Given the Tylenol debacle...twenty or thirty years ago...putting stuff back on the shelf might involve higher scrutiny.

Unless that involves bio-hazards and licking ice cream.
And then posting it on social media.

To be repeated as a trend.

I didn't know that word so I looked it up. Says it all and that's why we like things toasted and grilled. Well, most of us.

The only white bread I eat is a hamburger bun. I can't eat a whole wheat bun as a burger. Something else, yes. It's just a habit. I like sourdough bread. Is that white? I don't count it in if it is. Rationalization. The store has wheat sourdough. Bought that by mistake once and IDT we ate much of it. What's the point?

I'll have to remember 'maillard'.
