I like self checkout. I always use them unless there is no line at the cashier. Important to keep them employed.

I've yet to have a self checkout machine walk into my office and ask me to do it's taxes.

So for me it's a 'no thanks'.

The store has already dumped several people and let a machine do the work.
Walmart. I won't even go there except through the auto bay entrance. They have a cash register there for oil and batteries, etc. They will even check you out with a couple of store items like from sporting goods nearby.

Slight thread drift comment about shopping Home Depot........

My M.O. is to only go there from 7-7:30pm on a weekday night.

It's the best time of the day to avoid crowds.

Can't tell you how many times I've picked up lumber at this time slot and had plenty of associates available IF I wanted help. I usually don't need nor do I ask for help. But once in a while I do on certain items.

You can also get in and out pretty quick even wheeling a cart loaded down with lumber. Parking lot is also very open and vehicle free.....which is nice.

I will pick this lane 9/10 as it is often empty or a short line, and you get a cashier who can correctly punch in the code for any items that don't have a bar code (some lumber, loose hardware, etc.). .
Ha! I've been doing it for years! Also park in the Pro spots! I spend enough money there!

Self check out. Yay or nay?

I guess the last time I did not use pay at the pump and pump my own gas was when I was in Oregon back in 2006.

So that's you in your brodozer taking up the near-the-door loading area to buy a box of nails?

Will use them only if I have a few items. For Wal-Mart I use the app and they put it right in the car, i dont even go in. Fruits and veggies I get at Aldi anyway.

Will not shop at Home Depot. They sent a.gift card to get me back. I sent it back.

It is very easy to get a Pro number, and you do get kickbacks if you use your card.

I'm with you on this. More and more stores are moving to self-checkout in my neighborhood because they either can't get help and/or cutting costs. Where I shop the self-checkout lines can get very long. Don't even get me started when checking out beer, wine or spirits.

Honestly, I'm moving more and more to online shopping.

I don't mind self checkout. I'm extremely fast at it, plus it's fewer hands on my food. But when I see some dolt pushing a big cart full of stuff into that line it's guaranteed they don't know how to work it. And they don't. What happened to 15 items or less?

I'm sure the guys who open the boxes and stock the shelves wash their hands at least once a day (if that)

And that ship has sailed. We pump our own gas now. End of an era.

There’s only one state left where it’s illegal to pump your own gas.

Being a lonely old man, I always pick the pretty lady and chat her up. If she's not there I go to self checkout.

Did you know that the self service lanes are monitored for shop lifting?

personally I hate the self check out process as there are too many people that just don't know what the hell they are doing or have their head up their ass and block your "work area" I also dislike the bagging process as you quickly run out of space and if you move a bag back to the cart it goes crazy thinking you are trying to steal.

And yes I typically only try to use self check out when I am buying a few items but like last night.... out of 10-12 check out lines - only one was staffed and that cashier seemed to be moving at a snails pace and self check out area had a line 3 deep waiting for the 4 available machines......

When my wife and I did our New England States tour, my "rule" was I had to have a meal, and use the restroom in a state before could claim I had been in that state on my quest to get to all the contiguous 48 states. I planned ahead and filled up in Delaware after leaving Seahawk's lovely farm. We did the New Jersey Turnpike had lunch and used the facilities, and headed on to New York and across the fun GW bridge. It was astonishing all the cars and traffic just vanished to normal in Connecticut. Anyway, I did not have to get gas in NJ by planning and foresight. And I was really happy to get off the NJ Turnpike.

Yeah man. I've lived here my entire life and I don't like using the 'pike. It's best described as bumper to bumper at 70 miles per hour.
