Might add julienne of carrot in there for color and texture. If I get an orange tomorrow when I get the mushrooms, I'll flame some orange peel over the dish.

If I'm by myself at the grocery store I'll use it. Home Depot I'll use it too.
IF my wife is with me we'll use the checkers, but I'm NOT allowed to tell them how to bag the stuff, but I can help if needed.

I usually shop at Lowe’s, because it’s closer to my house. I like their self check out better, because they have both a handheld device, but more importantly, a barcode reader built into the machine.

That’s what bothers me, when I buy a drink of some kind. The cashiers always pick it up by the top/neck of the drink to scan it. Yuck 🤢

I try to be helpful and hold the drink myself, with the barcode facing them. All they have to do is scan it and I’m done.

Won't use one. I always may sure at least one cashier is working as I enter the store.....groceries, hardware, makes no difference. I have (politely...no Karens here) walked out and left a full cart of groceries next to the abandoned check-out lane when the only working cashier disappeared while I was shopping and I'm directed to self-checkout. Yes....I'll be that guy. Hope the manager had to personally restock everything in the cart.

Just a couple of miles further down the street is a competitor who always has cashiers available....Hopefully, this will never get to the self-service gas implementation level.

I like self checkout, unless I'm shopping with Vicki. She never fails to find someone to talk to in the checkout lane. The woman has an amazing super power of making a new friend wherever she goes. I love watching it happen. She can always bring a smile to a bedraggled, stressed out shopper standing in line.

I especially like pumping my own gas. I own 356 Porsches with hoods that have not been folded in half by ignorant gas station attendants, and I don't have to worry about that any more.

Most of my visits to Lowe's or Home Depot are for one or two small items. Self checkout is easy and faster. Both store never have enough check out cashiers, and those all have lines with people buying a lot of stuff.

With just a few items, self checkout is fine. It's probably quicker and easier. For a cart full of a weeks worth of groceries, the self checkout only allows one item at a time, and you have to wait for the computer to register each item on the bagging scale. I hate, hate, hate how slow it is. Very frustrating.

I live near one of the few Amazon Go stores. You walk in and scan your Amazon QR code. Pick up what you need and walk right out. No checkout. You are automatically charged for the items you take.

I just don't understand the grocery store method:
  1. Put items in your cart
  2. Take your cart to the long checkout line
  3. Wait in the line you chose, rather than being served first come first served
  4. Take items out of your cart and put them on the converyor belt
  5. The cashier scans the items one at a time
  6. Then the bagger handles the items again, for the 4th time.

Why can't the grocery cart scan the items as you put them in the cart, then you just pay on your way out? Stores like Amazon Go are so convenient, they will eventually put regular grocery stores out of business - unless home delivery puts all brick and mortar stores out of business first.

I am a certified geezer, but as long as I can go to the store to pick out my groceries, I will. Home delivery is going to be the pick of a stranger. Are they going to pick the best bananas, freshest milk or bread? Will they push aside the dented can and get a can with no dents. Will the eggs be checks for no cracked shells?

I honestly don't know as I have never had my groceries delivered, but I suspect I will do a better job of picking out the best of the batch of my food.

Stop&Shops around you can do that, when you enter the store you can get a cart and hand held scanner, as you load up your cart you scan each item when you're done shopping, you go to a register, download a code from the scanner, pay, and go on your way..

On occasion the store does spot checks of carts contents.

I always use them when they have them open. No lines usually and I bag my own groceries. But, I am always careful to make sure everything is rung-up. I also always take the receipt with me.

I shop at Safeway and they have "Digital Deals" where you need to scan a bar code from the item on your Safeway app. I religiously do this and about 80% of the time I have to ask a clerk to come enter the discounted amount as the app does not reflect the discount. It is not insignificant when the digital app will give you Oscar Meyer bacon at $2.97 a pound opposed to $9.99. It really bothers me when I go through all of the trouble and their app does not work properly. How may people even pay attention and realize they did not get the discount?

Generally speaking, I'm not a fan. That said, I will use 'em if the full-service registers are backed up, and I only have a few items.

• Will absolutely not use them if I have to enter/lookup a produce code, and/or sold by weight, or requires an I.D. to purchase. PITA!

• If a full-service line is open and empty or short, I'll go there every time. A little human interaction is usually good. Better if we can make each other smile a bit more.

• Sometimes I pay with cash, and usually only 1-2 self-serve registers will accept cash. Never a problem with a real cashier.

• I won't use a self-serve if it doesn't have a scanner gun. It is a lot easier to scan bar codes of items in a cart vs. having to drag them up over, and back again using the flatbed scanner.

Literal Pro-Tip: At Home Depot, Lowes, etc., there is usually a Contractor or Pro checkout, often by the lumber section and large roll-up door. There is always a cashier on duty there, and I can sense a lot of customers think the register is 'only' for professionals/contractors. I will pick this lane 9/10 as it is often empty or a short line, and you get a cashier who can correctly punch in the code for any items that don't have a bar code (some lumber, loose hardware, etc.).

I noticed in Sam's Club certain items show two prices: one if you check it out, and a slightly higher one if the help does it. Interesting.

Some around here never thought it to begin with. They saw the beginning of the carry-the-scanner-with-you thing fizzle and the long lines at the cashier checkouts while a traffic controller begs customers to come over tos self and then ends up doing the check out.

No cards at either of these chains either and their prices are lower.

AFA my own self checking out if it not going well I just chuck the item in the cart. If I was Jeff having to measure a pipe I'd look at it and throw a close number. If someone wants to go over my purchases/mistakes then they can check me out. I'll just plead stupidity.

They let shoplifters out w/o a hassle so they aren't gonna bother me if I give it a half baked try. I have no respect for the grocery "industry." It would be different if I was shopping at a local grocer owned by a family. No such thing around here. Even at the farmers market most are just going to the wholesale district that morning and picking out fruits and veggies. They don't grow jack siht. It's hundreds of miles to any real farms with a few exceptions.
