Glass of cold ice water by the bed. Take a small sip on flare up and swish it. Pain goes away for a few minutes or more.

Pain means the nerve is dying. There might be pain relief mouthwash. Your main concern should be the bacterial infection floating around in the bloodstream. That can cause heart and other issues. I had an abscess from wisdom tooth removal in my teens and that was no fun at all. Only time I've floated above the chair when that big needle went in, plus a lack of energy for a while.

Thanks, John - those are great suggestions.

Never knew they made a pain relief mouthwash.

As far as infection....I'd like to think the Amoxicillan will be taking care of all that. By end of day tomorrow I will have taken (3xdayx7days) = 21 (500mg) tablets.

Gotta just tough it through.......

There is also the option of a 50/50 Hydrogen Peroxide/Water rinse.
(do not swallow or you will puke !)

It's not an anti-bacterial agent which kills bio, but rather a debridement surfactant cleaner.
Probably bad for teeth long term..

The stuff on the surface will stay clean at least.

I called my dentist this morning and asked if they could move my status up to "urgent/need right away - cannot wait".

Mentioned I was in excruciating pain right now. "Didn't realize it would be so bad after initial visit and consultation 1 week ago. Thought the antibiotic would resolve the pain, which it hasn't. No experience with this kind of thing....but know my responsibility as your patient is to report my worsening condition. Am willing to pay more if the doc can squeeze me in - even after hours - whatever. Just like getting a plumber after hours - you pay more. I also asked if it's possible to rearrange the schedule swapping my March 5 appointment with a less urgent one."

Not a lot of confidence this will change anything but at least I made the call.

Next step is to make more calls to other practices, if mine can't figure something out.

You're always going to be the best advocate for your own health. At this point it doesn't make sense for me health-wise to sit out another 14 days.

Good news......my dentist called back and were able to get me an appointment with Daytona Endodontics for next Thursday the 29th. So not only does this move me up 1 week.....the work will be done by an Endodontist, as was recommended so strongly by some here.

The cost will be a bit more...~$1,500....but the important thing is to take care of this painful issue that is interfering with my lifestyle.

I'll go ahead and check with my Humana agent in the meantime just to confirm what is covered or not. I still have the Humana credit card that I've used in the past for dental work, but those charges have never been this much - just my semi-annual checkups and cleanings.

Also tooth hasn't been that bad this morning. I ate 2 bananas so far....so trying not to poke the bear.....

Thanks for the update. That’s good news.

Besides pain for a burn, I think dental pain is up there.

Want to also add an Amazon order arrived today with Clove Oil and a Motrin dual action product:

Clove Oil

Motrin Dual

Both have worked FANTASTIC!

The Clove Oil kicked in after about 5-10 minutes and completely numbed out any pain 100%. Like having an angel of mercy visit your tooth!

Found clove oil at a whole foods type place this morning and brought it to a friend. She was talking to me when she dabbed it on the sore tooth and said in about a minute she felt some relief then she kept talking for a few more minutes and said "Oh Man, this is working".

Dr. Szell’s Fast Acting Clove Oil is the best. You can get it on Amazon.

Daytona Endodontics just called - had a cancellation for tomorrow at 9am so I took the slot!

Pain hasn't been as bad the last few days. Maybe the new antibiotic is helping but the clove oil really helped too.

I'll be glad when things get back to normal and I'm not doing all these meds.....

From what I know, after a few root canals, the Endodontist has more training. Think about the actual process, they drill holes into the crown of the tooth precisely over the roots. Then they use a little hand drill and destroy all of the root. They have to get every bit of it. He should take several HD X-rays before during and after to be certain it is all gone. Then fill the holes, and when the Novocaine wears off, all the pain is gone.

Simple question how much would you pay right now to to have all the pain gone in that tooth, and get back to normal? It is worth every penny, and you can keep that tooth another 25 or 30 years with any luck. They do get brittle and can break with time. Then it is the much more expensive implant and crown solution.

Hey Glen......100%, man.

Had a phone convo with my Humana agent this morning and told him the additional $500 I'm paying to get this resolved a week earlier is worth every penny.

And he agreed with my sentiment.

My policy is such that *some* dental is covered, but not all.

Last year Humana sent everyone a flex spending card for optical and dental with a $750 balance.

Well this year it's only $250.

I'll use that up for just my 2x year cleanings, so I don't plan on using it tomorrow.

My agent said to hand them my Humana card and see if there's anything they can do anyway. It has a network code at the bottom that might save some $.

He also said I should send a copy of the invoice into Humana afterwards and see if it does any good. Said he's heard that sometimes they will reimburse a policy owner.

Also said they like getting letters like that as it helps when they go before government to demonstrate what the folks need in terms of coverage...

I'll post a followup tomorrow - thanks again to all......
